Who are the best public speakers to learn from for effective storytelling?

Martin Luther King Jr. - He is one of the greatest speakers in history. His famous "I Have a Dream" speech is a perfect example of using story elements to influence the audience. Brené Brown - She is an expert on the topics of courage and vulnerability. Her research in this field is presented in a very inspiring storytelling style. Simon Sinek - His books and speeches about "Why" are very useful for understanding the core elements of a powerful story. Stephen Colbert - While comedic, Colbert's storytelling style provides a big lesson on how to entertain and teach a message at the same time.

I have learned a lot from two of the best public speakers and storytellers: Martin Luther King Jr. and Jordan Peterson. They both use stories to convey powerful messages, connect with their audiences, and inspire action. Here are some reasons why I admire their storytelling skills: Martin Luther King Jr. was a master of using classic story structure with a beginning, middle and end, as well as inciting incidents that put the world out of balance and called for change. He also used picture words, analogies and metaphors to create vivid imagery and emotion in his speeches. His famous “I Have a Dream” speech is a prime example of his storytelling skills, as he painted a vision of a more beautiful tomorrow that was worth fighting for.

Lisa Nichols is a stand out motivational speaker. She uses her own experiences of hardship and determination to succeed. Her audiences connect with her because she lets them see her vulnerability. I personally don't relate to speakers who only talk about their wins as if that alone is inspiration.

Jordan Peterson is a professor of psychology and a bestselling author who explores the meaning of stories, myths, and folk tales in his lectures and books. He argues that stories help us figure out the world, as they communicate ideas that cannot be expressed in words, but only in narratives. He draws on his extensive knowledge of various disciplines, such as neuroscience, philosophy, religion and literature, to analyze and explain the patterns and symbols in stories. He also uses stories from his own life and popular culture to illustrate his points and make them relevant to his listeners.

One thing I find helpful from Elon Musk is his ability to learn from different fields and integrate them into his projects. He is not only an expert in engineering, business, and innovation, but also a curious and avid reader of various topics, such as physics, biology, history, philosophy, and literature. He uses his broad and deep knowledge to create novel and groundbreaking solutions that combine multiple disciplines and perspectives. For example, he applied his understanding of rocket science, economics, and environmentalism to create SpaceX, a company that aims to make space travel affordable and sustainable. He also applied his knowledge of neuroscience, computer science, and ethics to create Neuralink,

...... a company that aims to enhance human cognition and communication with brain-computer interfaces. He is constantly learning and challenging himself to expand his horizons and improve his skills. He is an inspiration for me to become a lifelong learner and a multidisciplinary thinker.

An oppressed people need a voice who can express their pain, bear witness to their suffering and encapsulate their hopes. Gandhi, Dr King, Nelson Mandela were the voices of the masses.

Les Brown - probably the best motivational speaker there is. At least in my opinion. He is a master at weaving stories and quotations throughout his talks. Les Brown uses storytelling in such a way that you really do come away with the feeling that certainty you can do it! You feel educated, informed, motivated, and entertained. He always says, "Never make a point without a story and never tell a story without a point." I quote him a lot when I am teaching business people how to tell stories to promote their brand and/or companies. Les Brown is my favourite!

Gandhiji - is one of the "best public speakers" that India has ever produced. He captivated the audience with his speech and his quotes convey a "powerful story" and are remembered till date ! For eg : his quote "An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind'' taught the principles of non-violence , peace and harmony !
