Which statistical analysis software provides the most accurate forecasting capabilities?

One wants flexibility when it comes to modeling. My sense is that R and Python rise to the top at being able to accommodate the desired model for forecasting. I have also used Excel for event projection which is cumbersome but still good for most situations.

I have recently used Eviews for some of my projects I could really say that it’s a wonderful software and very user-friendly. One of the very few software in which you don’t need to code. Python is always the first choice, but it mostly used by an individual who knows how to code the one who have very few knowledge about it can definitely go for Eviews.

In my opinion, out of all these statistical analysis software, R and Python are famous for accurate forecasting, thanks to advanced libraries such as Prophet and stats models. Additionally, these software don't require a license. Proprietary products like SAS and IBM SPSS also offer robust forecasting tools. Accuracy depends on the specific application and user expertise.

R is mainly used in Posit/ R Studio, where you can quickly create projects and install libraries. The user interface is great and intuitive, separating the window in code, variables, outputs and plots/ views.

SPSS software allows several data formats into its spreadsheet for analysis and also takes in cases as huge as 2 billion for manipulation, processing, and analysis, I think with this it has a good quality data handling process

To add to this, the software should allow flexibility to transform data (level, log, growth, difference,...) and to handle different frequency data.

Machine Learning methods typically outperform others and R and Python are the some of the best options on my opinion in this field. Of course combined with their IDEs such as RStudio or Spyder.

SPSS allows you to seamlessly punch in your variables and factors with some covariant on it for modeling and analysis of statistical data

I think it could be difficult for one software to offer all techniques. However it should at least offer the most common that are used. But for some specific tasks one need sometime a specialize software that goes deep. Open source softwares offer flexibility to incorporate many techniques with specific packages or with space for programing.

To further enhance the precision of forecasting, advanced metrics such as the Weighted Mean Absolute Percentage Error (WMAPE) and Symmetric Mean Absolute Percentage Error (sMAPE) can be utilized. These metrics provide a more nuanced view of forecast accuracy by accounting for the relative size of each error in proportion to the actual observed values.

Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Squared (RMSE) and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) are some of the most important metrics to evaluate the statistical and machine learning models.

In my opinion and experience, community support is by far the most important consideration when picking a tool for statistical and data analysis - effectively all the other considerations can be mitigated with sufficiently strong community support through libraries, existing open source models etc. This particular point is also what I believe makes Python so strong, it has the largest corporate and open source backing for ml/data/stat, substantially outperforming other open source languages like R and software like stata/sas

Regarding the developer community, Python has a very large support system, which contributes to its popularity. With a wide range of online forums such as Stack Overflow and GitHub repositories, users can easily find solutions to their queries and share knowledge. This community continually develops new libraries and tools, enriching Python's capabilities in data manipulation and predictive analysis. Additionally, Python's user-friendly syntax attracts a diverse set of contributors, promoting collaborative projects and ensuring a wealth of features across all skill levels. Similarly, R benefits from a strong community that maintains numerous forums, mailing lists, and online resources dedicated to supporting R users around the world.

Another reason why R and Python are at the top of the list for me. Some of the best and largest communities out there, forums, GitHub and other communities too.

Community support in Python is very strong with large number of users, projects, documentation in Github. The LLMs seem well trained on programming in Python. As of May 2024, I prefer Claude and Gemini for converting my prompts into usable code. I am a beginner Python coder and only able to do what I'm doing with help from LLMs. The other resource I am using a lot is the podcast and Youtube universe to learn about the latest techniques and use-cases in Python.

It's not really the software that counts - it's the thinking behind it! After you have decided what are you trying find out, what models to test, what methods are appropriate etc. the rest is pressing buttons.
