It is so u are aware and adjust, not to frame your business on them.. you don’t want to your identity to be built as a reaction to your competition..( unless that is your business model) . The reason to monitor is to learn where the market is going and how customers are behaving..and what commands premium. If you don't do experimentation, you will never innovate and never be unique. Every startup must have 10%-15% fund allocation for experimentation while considering 99% it may fail. In my experience, it is a lack of agreement in these values and visions that creates the most team conflicts and bottlenecks at the scale-up phase. They don't have to be set in stone forever, but it is vital that there are early and regular conversations between founders, owners, boards, and stakeholders to ensure alignment. Then deciding what is the desired culture for successful strategy execution is key.

This is the make or break of the startup and it starts from the head. Look at WeWork, FTX, Theranos - all companies turned into cults. That's vision and values gone wrong. When it goes right, it can help a company survive any downturn or crisis because people stick around and put in the effort - Netflix in the Blockbuster days and Amazon when it was still competing with Barnes and Noble. These companies almost died in those times but the commitment, vision and values of their founders rallied the troops and they executed a challenging pivot.
