What's your process for defining and scoping product road map features?

You always have to start with the consumer, at the end of the day, whatever is designed and placed in the roadmap is to deliver a delightful user experience. What our team usually do is the following:- 1) Re-identify and validate the jobs to be done and ensure clarity of what the consumer wants to achieve 2) what are the external trends and industry trends affecting the user demand and selection of a product in the past, now and projecting in the future 3) Identify the features that would serve consumer jobs to be done, in line with your organizational vision and product vision and the existing trends 4) clearly place the new features on the new product roadmap and identify possible success criteria

One tool I've started using recently is an Opportunity Solution Tree. It helps me visualize all the potential ideas that we have and ties each one to the opportunity it addresses. It's a great way to visualize all the potential things you can work on at once, and then once my team picks the best ones we can add them to the roadmap.

Here's the two biggest mistakes I see new product teams making in regards to roadmaps: 1. Not having a roadmap 2. Not communicating your roadmap enough to stakeholders. Recommended practice: Set up regular roadmap reviews with stakeholders. Start with monthly, and adjust as needed. Make it a dialogue, not a monologue.
