What's your definition of cold and warm calling?

Cold Calling - person has no idea you're calling. Warm Calling - Person has no idea you're calling but your name or the company name rings a bell because they've either received an email or correspondence or seen your content on social media.

I have been actively working in sales for more than 25 years. Cold calling was the biggest hurdle for me at the beginning. Only when I found the right attitude and learned how important discipline and hard work is in cold calling did I become really successful.

This is not rocket science. There is a difference but it is a slight one. For me Warm calling I have a bit more confidence as I have something to work with and build upon to create a level of urgency. Cold calling is an area you have to be precise you don't have many shots with that contact. So if you are leaving a msg, and they are listening, make it count. When calling in either of these scenarios, my goal is how can I solve problems? How can I make this interaction count and actually help my contact? Make no mistake, when I help I am able to make a deal and earn a commission. I am a sales person at the core of it. Cold and Warm calling is a key to the sales cycle.

Cold calling is like the opening act in a sales cadence symphony, at least in my book. It's that magic wand that gets the attention of prospects and nudges your product or service into their consciousness. But hey, in a world where they're bombarded with calls, slipping in a pattern interrupter is key. My go-to! A genuine admission that it's a cold call, followed by a humble ask for just 30 seconds to see if what we've got jives with their needs. Sure, there might be some initial resistance, but I've seen it work wonders—99% of the time, it gets us those precious moments or more to chat and make a real connection. Cold calling is to engage a prospect who has never had experience with you or your product with a strong assumption about a problem they have. The reason lately people say it does not work is they are not doing it effectively. A misconception about call calling is that you need a script and you have to call as many people as possible. This is why it does not work for most people. Cold calling starts with research on the person/company you will be engaging with the sole purpose of uncovering a problem they might have that your product solves. Warm calling is about handling inbound leads of following up with prospects. There's a myth that you can warm up cold prospects by sending them emails etc. Either they respond to you, or you don't know if you warmed them up. The safest best is to treat most like cold.

In my experience you need to be gentle with warm leads. Just because someone downloaded a white paper or attended a webinar doesn’t mean they want to buy your services or even aware they agreed to be called. I believe it’s best to still treat these as if they were slightly cold. Use the opt in as an icebreaker to kick off the conversation and find a problem your product/service solves.

A common mistake I made when starting out my sales career is to assume that the lead is interested to buy when they are warm (a.i expressed minimal interest in my offering). Big mistake! Why? Because there might be many reasons why they are looking at my offering research, interested in the topic or simply browsing. Showing interest is not the same as showing a purchase intent. The only permission you have as a seller in a warm call is the permission to qualify. Assess the needs of the person. If looking for more info provide that. If interested in the topic discuss it with them. Come from a place of a human and express a genuine curiosity. Only then you build trust and have your call to action if the qualification criteria are met.

Success in cold calling (CC) comes from two things preparation and practice. Understand that CC is a process it is not an event. It starts with researching your Ideal customer. What are the pains they have, what are other solutions on the market, and what might be their objectives and goals? Once you do that you can group your leads by categories so that when you call you have a similar pain or a use case so your initial assumption is at least reasonable to have. Once you've done this start calling and prepare for a genuine conversation. Whan you enter into a conversation do not push your agenda try to be helpful and listen to what information they give you. Succeeding in a competitive space takes practice and prep, as I mentioned earlier. You've got to get your potential customers – to know your product inside out, and understand what your competition is up to (not to knock them, but to show off what makes your product shine). It's also about uncovering those unexpected problems for your customers—they might not even realize what they're missing until you show them the solution.

It’s easy to over complicate the cold calling process, with all the information and “advice” that’s out there and can be overwhelming. Do: - Be professional but informal - Speak with confidence and answer questions as quick as possible - Have a script on hand - Have common objections with answers on hand - Find a pain point you can solve - Assume you are speaking to the correct person, don’t ask - Use a permission based opener - Close with a soft CTA Don’t: - Stumble over your words - Ask for time at the end of the call - Be pushy - Talk over the prospect - Say “yeah” “I understand” “uh-huh” to make it seem like your listening, just listen

Start by not making the assumption it's a warm call. you can easily lose it right away. Instead, focus on igniting immediately their familiarity. "You were looking into content around problem X" "It seems that problem X resonated based on my email" etc. Re-hook them in.

In my experience, warm calling works best if you are genuinely curious about how you can help the prospect learn something new. Either about their problem or a possible solution. Listen carefully to what they say and why they have engaged with your offering. Try to qualify them not as a lead but qualify their reasoning on why they have expressed interest. Once you learn this you then switch to their agenda and if they wish to move slowly do not press. On the other hand, if they are looking for a specific thing you have to give details quickly and do not try to upsell. Make sure you follow up and add value in the next conversation do not just ask for the lead to pull the trigger on your offering.

Cold call: "I am 10% sure my solution is relevant to a problem they have and are willing to solve." Warm call: "I am 20% sure my solution is relevant to a problem they have and are willing to solve."

Cold calling and warm calling are basically identical if you have the correct mindset. Assuming your lead is ready to buy simply because they are warm is a big mistake. On the other hand cold outreach takes more time and research effort. Any type of direct outreach to customers should be carefully evaluated in terms of strategy and executed in a well-thought-out manner. Only then it will be successful in acquiring customers.

Consider that cold calling and warm calling are synonymous! My definition of Cold Calling & Warm Calling. It's the same objective. To see if there's a fit. To expand-it's any activity or conversation to position yourself in front of a current or potential customer with the intention to: Inquire, assess, discover & educate so you can determine whether there's a fit & relationship worth pursuing which results in acquiring, retaining & growing revenue & more sales & helping clients achieve their goals. If you are cold calling, you're doing it wrong. To me, a cold call is one where you know nothing about the individual and/or company you're calling. In every case, you should be doing research up front to identify as many common interests, common connections, relevant market intel, or maybe you went to the same university. A call will be as warm as you're willing to make it.

To save time - devote blocks on your calendar separate from your actually calling. - prospecting first - research second - calling third Use permission based approach. People don't like being blindsided into a conversation so be honest. - "hey you don't expect me to call am I catching you at a bad time? Calling for {company name}" - "I saw you are involved {with a process your solution solves} do you perhaps have this problem?" - "Hey could you help me figure out who deals with {problem you solve} at {company you are calling}." Important - be curious, do not try to lead the conversation, rather try to have a conversation.

A salesperson is only as good as data and research! Most of the best salespeople I’ve ever met use a script religiously. Don’t let that go over your head!

The warm calling is a very dangerous notion. If you approach a cold call convinced the prospect is warmed up is like getting in a boxing ring convinced your opponent is beneath you. If you're right great. If you're wrong it's over before it's started.

If we’ve had ANY communication previously…it’s NOT a cold call. This means the approach must be totally different compared with calling ANYONE where there has been NO previous communication. That includes previous email, DMs, face to face [e.g. trade show]. This shows us that any previous form of comms automatically gives us a point of reference that we can refer to on the call. Is previous communication beneficial? You can bet your a** on it. ????

Sales people have to realise it is all about information. How much accurate information you have for the prospect and their company before you make the call. Everyone is focused only on the 3/5 minute interaction on the phone. But success in cold calling is a process that starts way before. Collecting information is vital. How does it looks? You sell an accounting software. Decision maker is probably the CFO. You can start by calling the office number, call the accountant, call the FP&A person check out their hierarchy. Use this to make healthy assumptions: - what systems they use - who oversees what area of the team - how your solution affects other teams etc. Having this information makes the call to the CFO much more valuable.

Any time you are having a first conversation with someone its actually a cold call, irrespective of how much they know about you and your offering. You still need to build a relationship of trust, and facilitate the sale helping the prospect to come to the right buying decision for them, at that time.
