This is an area that is overlooked by many companies and what you end up with is a lack of consistency of the desired end result. I have worked with many installers and what may work for one in training may not necessarily work for another. I am a visual person and when I am doing hands on training, I want them to do nothing the first one to two days except watch and ask questions. After that, I turn the tables and see what they have retained and find the areas that are in need of additional attention. Follow up is crucial and must be ongoing . Mentorship programs are important and help these individuals refine their skills.
