Tools are optional in many cases. I like Scrivener; however, writing in a Word or Google Document is fine. Writers don't "need" storytelling and character development features, and those things can become a distraction.

I have a mission for my blog and a key message for each blog post. I return to these whenever I get side-tracked, making them effectively my guardrails. When it comes to writing, I prefer to freestyle on paper or the simplest of note apps, which helps prevent the clunky UI of writing apps from distracting me. And I do them on full screen mode so that all notifications are somewhat muted. A key feature of my blog is strictly 5-minute articles so that's roughly 1,000 words. Until I have written (or regurgitated) 500 words, I try not to minimise the window

I would say stay flexible. Different moods across the day means you're productive with different platforms depending on the time. Sometimes you might want to scribble on a note pad in a cafe or outdoors, other times you may want to bash the keyboard. I'd say that if words are not flowing, change the medium.

Remember to go back to the main intention of your writing and who you're writing it for, and then write your story from their standpoint. After all, if no one is reading what you've written, that why are you writing? Even if you're doing it for yourself, it would be interesting to think about which version of yourself in the future would you want to read what you're writing now.
