VCs are at almost every startup event. This will give you compound eyes on the situation, and you can take your exploration from there. The thing I found most helpful was interning for free for multiple VC firms - not only does this give you an understanding of the role, but you can compare styles and teams to understand what kind of environment you want to be in (e.g. traditional VC, corporate venture, family office, etc.). Further, I did a VC apprenticeship many years ago that helped provide the basics 101 of VC, but allowed us to also bring and pitch deals to a syndicate of investors, so you get to see the role in reality. Highly recommend testing this out before fully committing. And if you have the means, taking part in angel investments yourself will quickly teach you about what sourcing is like and how to analyze opportunities.

At the beginning there is little room for error by taking on an employee who becomes a problem. The VC / Investing business is not about finance ; it’s about developing the ability to understand business models and the propensity of success due to multiple factors like markets, technology, team, demand, gap in markets etc etc and then investing at the right price to make an exit at a higher rate. Of course the start is financial Modelling but you will succeed only if you are able to understand business value chain and supply chain and develop the ability to select the wining models and teams. This will come from two sources 1). Experience and 2) Networking. (Including reading and listening ). Start here if you are new to this field and are keen to succeed.
