It's interesting how things change. In my career, I have been learning a lot from courses and books. But now. LinkedIn and Newsletters have became my main source of learning and gathering new information. The community on LinkedIn is great. You can quickly get an opinion of like-minded experts about particular topics. And also newsletters have become really an amazing source of information.

3 Apply your learning

The best way to learn new technologies is to apply them in practice. You can do this by creating your own projects, experiments, or prototypes, or by contributing to existing ones. You can also use new technologies in your current agile project, as long as you follow the principles of agile development, such as delivering value, getting feedback, and iterating. Learning from a course and actually doing it are two different things. Being stuck on a tricky bug for a week might teach you much more than you would learn reading a book, so stick with it, and ask for help if you ever need it!

Others will have questions that you haven't considered before, they will make you see things differently. Then you're all learning together. Don't pretend you're an expert when you are not, but giving a lightning talk, writing an article or running a workshop are great ways to give back to the community and keep improving !

One strategy that works really well is not to have short spikes of learnings, but actually dedicate daily time to learn a new thing. That could be as low as just 10-15 minutes or 30 min. The important part is that you do it daily. If you manage to do that. You'll be surprised how much you can learn/achieve by doing that. Small consistent actions lead to big wins!

In my own journey I’ve often wondered if software engineers ahead of me were somehow smarter or built different. However, slowly but surely I’ve made progress over the years, realizing my dreams. Here is a helpful framework for learning: Step 1: Read the official docs, grab a book, etc. Step 2: Try it out Step 1a: Do more reading / research Step 3: Get it working Step 4: Refactor Step 5: Summarize and document Step 6: Share what you’ve learned I’ve used it throughout my career to go from a graphic designer to frontend engineering, to fullstack engineer, to tech lead, and now headed towards engineering manager. If you choose consistency it works!
