What are your project performance metrics?

I've been thinking about metrics around end user impression. You can have the most successful implementation (on time, on budget, meets need), but if your end users weren't involved and don't like the delivered product, was it successful? The hard part is that user satisfaction is almost always taken after the project has wrapped. Is there any metric that meets that need?

By monitoring and analyzing these project performance metrics, project managers can make informed decisions, identify areas needing improvement, and take corrective actions to keep the project on track and ensure its success.

Mainly Time, quality and cost are the pillars to determine project success can be summarized as: Benefits resulting from the capability/enhancements delivered by a project. Time/Schedule to deliver project output. Cost to deliver project output. (Or cost benefit analysis study) Scope of work to deliver project output (to ensure that the cost paid whether for the project or its requirements will be rewarded).

My company has struggled with project metrics for some time, especially going from a waterfall approach to attempting Agile. While we deal with project intake challenges, budget constraints, technology questions and regulatory/audit concerns, the biggest amount of success we've seen is by simply working with our business lines to document the original asks & then involving them in creating requirements/functions. It's changed our world that they are able to see things from the start, provide feedback and insight along the path to then introduce a finalized product or process.

One thing that I realize that for a traditional or waterfall project, Project Performance Metrics is a valuable tool. As we are moving towards Agile, it becomes less of a useful tool, as incremental achievement and change of scopes and objectives became norm.

Benefits and Outcomes: By tracking the defect rate, you catch and address issues early in the development process, reducing the likelihood of critical bugs reaching the final release. Ensuring compliance with security standards and regulations mitigates potential legal and reputational risks, safeguarding both the client's and end-users' interests.

Yes, I agree, without proper scope there will always be disagreements and disputes, it will be like a ship sailing without radar. To know what is required is half work done. Nothing can sunstitute SCOPE of work done at the beginning and fine tuning for changes later on.

Customer satisfaction score (CSAT) is another project performance metric that measures how satisfied the customers or beneficiaries of a public service or program are with quality, timeliness, and responsiveness. The CSAT score is usually calculated by asking customers to rate their satisfaction on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 is very dissatisfied and 5 is very satisfied. The average customer score is then reported as the CSAT score for the service or program. A high CSAT score indicates that the service or program is meeting or exceeding the customers' expectations, while a low CSAT score suggests room for improvement.
