For me, fundraising for a cause starts (and ends) with a STORY. If I want people to connect to my cause, I have to show first my personal connection to it, and I do this through stories. A good story has characters, drama, challenges to overcome, goals to achieve, passion, a hero's journey, and often some pain. All of the elements of the best stories you have read or heard are the same elements of a pitch to a potential donor. How the story is told depends on the audience one tries to reach: a written proposal, a presentation, or a conversation over wine and dinner, each requiring incorporating all the abovementioned elements. Show your passion for the topic and let it carry the story for you.
In my experience working with non-profit simple events like pancake breakfasts and spaghetti dinners. These events as drive-through events where participants can pull up, make a donation, and then drive away.

It allows you to leverage the power of social media, storytelling, and peer-to-peer referrals to reach new and existing donors. You can use a platform like Kickstarter, GoFundMe, or Indiegogo to create your campaign page, set your goal and deadline, and offer rewards or incentives for different donation levels. You can also update your supporters on your progress and impact, and thank them for their contributions.
Aside from grant writing I believe some of the more creative fundraising efforts come from getting others engaged. These fundraising events include fundraising events like a black tie dinner event with giveaways that are donated, golf tournaments, secret auctions, raffles etc. The goal is to make it fun while fundraising as well as to engage others to help you meet your goals.
You can use things that will happen automatically, like fall leaves and winter snow. Members of your organization can go out into the community and provide these services for donors. This will also bring attention to your organization and cause.
If you have a product or service that aligns with your mission and values, you can sell it as a way to generate income and awareness for your non-profit. For example, you can sell merchandise, such as t-shirts, mugs, or stickers, with your logo or slogan. You can also sell your expertise, such as consulting, training, or coaching, to individuals or organizations who can benefit from your knowledge and skills. You can market your products or services online, through your website, social media, or email list, or offline, through events, markets, or partnerships.
In order for your sales to succeed is to create merchandise that speaks with your audience. If you just sell generic (such as organization logo, plain and boring) it’s not going to have the impact that you could if you get creative. Example: when I was a director at DAREL (academic institution) we needed to raise funds in order to do bigger events, we decided to create arts and memes that had something to do with International Relations and the directory itself, and it was a huge success. We were able to raise funds that lasted for about 2 and half years! Even if you’re not an artsy person you can do research on different social medias and let your creativity flourish.
A challenge or contest is a fun and interactive way to motivate your supporters to take action and donate to your non-profit. You can design a challenge or contest that relates to your cause, such as a fitness challenge, a photo contest, or a quiz. You can ask your supporters to register, pay a fee, or fundraise for your non-profit to participate. You can also offer prizes, recognition, or feedback for the winners or participants.

Some ways to get started is first ask your target audience what they would like the challenge event to be. For example if you are working with a Corporate Partner, give employees a choice of three challenge fundraising events. This helps get buy in from the get go from your supporters. Set a realistic fundraising target for your supporters. Make it a tangible target i.e ￡10,000 will enable us a charity to run 100 mentoring sessions for 25 young disadvantaged young people. Ensure your supporters have the resources and knowledge they need to fundraise effectively. If your supporters are really clear where the money is going, they will be more motivated to reach their fundraising target.
As a Board Member for a local non-profit, we have seen huge success around an annual Run/Walk event. People who give to a non-profit cause generally do so because they believe in what the non-profit is doing. Creating membership opportunities makes the donations even more meaningful and gives ownership to the donors. When donors feel like they play a critical role of the work, they are more engaged and will engage others. When you interact with donors as members of the non-profit you help them to see how their contribution is making a difference in the work the non-profit is doing. They see how they are able to effect change that is important to them through the work they are helping to support financially at whatever level they are able. This also leads to greater volunteer engagement beyond the financial.

Something else to consider is how can I strengthen the charities relationship with the supporter/ funder. Here are some tips in relation to Trusts and Foundations fundraising. Try and give regular updates to your supporters, if you only get in touch with the funder when your funding report is due or you would like to apply for a 2nd round of funding, it can become a sterile relationship. -Look to invite them to a project to see the impact first hand. - Give them some project highlights, photos etc every 3 months. - Arrange an annual event for your supporters to come and meet the beneficiaries, project leads.
My specialty is fishery conservation. Science, education, and advocacy are integral and equal parts of a fundraising three-legged stool. Identify the issue that needs attention and inspires passion while lacking good science. This is the core of good conservation. Raise money for the science. Educate members on the subject. Then, you create engaged advocates. There will never be a shortage of projects. Your members will always have tangible ways to make a difference.
It is important to remember that using a creative idea to engage a new constituent or secure an initial donation is only the first part of driving sustainable revenue growth. Once you have that new donor in your community of support it is critically important that you keep them there. Any plan for a new or creative fundraising tactic needs to include detailed, actionable follow up plan that addresses how you will: thank donors promptly, communicate the impact of their gift, and learn and honor their preferences for communications. Otherwise, you run the risk that your creative idea will be just a flash in the pan.
