What is your experience with Scrum methodologies?

Many of my clients are Scrum experts, or at least have some experience with it. Scrum is an agile project management methodology that provides a structured framework for the development and delivery of products or projects. It emphasizes collaboration, adaptability, and customer feedback throughout the development process. Scrum involves organizing work into short, time-boxed iterations called "sprints," typically lasting two to four weeks, and relies on roles like Scrum Master, Product Owner, and the development team to ensure efficient and effective project execution.

My experience with agile methodologies has been positive, allowing for better collaboration and adaptability in our projects. That comes on interacting with PM's, Dev's and collaboration on both.

Scrum is a framework, facilitates 1. Building complex project into small, iterative short cycles called Sprints 2. Helps sponsors to validate market and correct early 2. Split the project responsibility in roles Product Owner, Scrum Master, Development Team 3. Sets goal and facilitates with required details in the beginning of the sprint - Sprint Planning. 4. Supports collaboration with in the Team and ensures team meets at-least ones in 24hrs at same time and place - Daily Standup 5. End of the sprint, team demos the completed activities to business and get feedback called Sprint Review 6. End of sprint, team reflects on what went well and what needs improvement and mandatorily take one improvement in every sprint called Sprint Retrospect

In my journey, I've easily navigated the Scrum waters, embracing its collaborative essence. I've steered projects using Scrum methodologies, fostering transparent communication and empowering teams to adapt swiftly. I thrive in the iterative rhythm of sprint cycles, ensuring each step synchronizes toward project success. Daily stand-ups are my compass, guiding the team towards shared goals. I've witnessed firsthand how Scrum fosters a culture of continuous improvement, where challenges become opportunities. When detailing your Scrum experience, emphasize the accomplishments you've garnered through this approach. I would focus on facilitating communication within the team, removing obstacles, and ensuring the Scrum framework is effectively implemented. My goal would be to foster a collaborative and adaptive environment, helping the team deliver high-quality products in incremental iterations.

Consider to follow some strategies like : - clearly define roles, understand each role - maintain a realistic product goal, prioritizing tasks and do not overload the backlog - conduct effective sprint planning setting achievable goals and breaking down the tasks - clear, open and daily communication - Ensure each sprint results in a potentially shippable product increment, providing value to stakeholders regularly.

Some of the most common mistakes in Scrum are, 1. Sometimes we don’t understand our project needs properly and just start using Scrum. We think that Scrum is better than other frameworks but no framework is better than others, it only depends on the project you are working on. Sometimes Waterfall or Kanban gives you better results, if you have different delivery schedules and demand. We need to understand how Scrum is different than others and should use if you get benefits in long or short term. We should not blindly follow Scrum. 2. Scrum needs time to evolve, it’s more like a learning from experiments with controlled risk. If you are not getting expected results, don’t mix it with waterfall, you need to learn from your mistakes and plan.

Scrum can easily be misconstrued with other methodologies. - Clearly explain your specific role in Scrum. Talk about the meetings you've been a part of and what you achieved there, using numbers if possible. - List the main tools you've used. Highlight how you've worked well with others and made your work processes better over time. - Use clear Scrum terms but keep the language simple so anyone can understand.

Some common Scrum pitfalls: - Sprints as mini-waterfalls: Most often seen by teams that operate in a silo-like model (little collaboration outside of the standup) and story hand-off to another team member. - Too much WIP: Each member should only have 1 story in-progress at a time, AND be actively working on that story. If an issue arises, flag the story as blocked (and no longer in-progress), inform the Scrum Master of the blocker, and pull a different story to begin working on. - Planning per-member and not on team capacity: Typically seen in as "Every team member needs a story assigned to them at the start of the Sprint". This has the side-effect of encouraging siloing and obstructing the team's self-organization ability.

Clear Communication: Foster open and transparent communication within the team. Ensure everyone understands their roles, responsibilities, and the goals of each sprint. Proper Training: Make sure team members are adequately trained in Scrum principles and practices. This includes not only the development team but also the Product Owner and Scrum Master. Realistic Planning: Set achievable sprint goals and timelines. Avoid overcommitting and regularly reassess the team's capacity to deliver during sprint planning. Effective Sprint Reviews: Conduct thorough sprint reviews to gather feedback and make necessary adjustments. Use these reviews as opportunities for continuous improvement.

Learn about all the Scrum ceremonies, purpose and key roles and responsibilities. Most confusing questions are how you measure timelines and give estimates to client if you are using Story Points. Story points are like size S, M, L and don’t have direct relation with time. We have lots of matrices and reports available, you should learn those. This is also a conflict question between Project Managers and Scrum Master/Agile Coach.

Learn about the scrum ceremonies, what is the purpose of those ceremonies, what will be the roles and responsibilities of scrum team members ( both Dev and testers ). Then you can prepare in the aspect of how well you participated in the ceremonies and your role in those activities.

Recognize and understand the 3 official Scrum roles, and the duties of each: - Scrum Master - Product Owner - Team Member Note: Scrum officially makes no distinction between a "developer" and "tester" Know what a Sprint is, how a Sprint is started, when it is finished, and how story scope is treated once a Sprint has started (the scope is locked-in until the end of the Sprint or the Sprint is cancelled by the PO). Know the official Scrum ceremonies and the role they play in the Sprint: - Planning - Daily Standup - Sprint Review - Sprint Retrospective Understand what a PI (Product Increment) is in Scaled Agile Framework, as well as the goal of PI Planning. Know what Story Points are, how they're used, and how they should NOT be used.

To prepare for Scrum questions, familiarize yourself with the Scrum Guide, understand key concepts like roles (Scrum Master, Product Owner, Development Team), events (Sprints, Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, Sprint Retrospective), and artifacts (Product Backlog, Sprint Backlog, Increment). Reflect on your real-world experiences with Scrum, focusing on challenges faced and how you addressed them. Practice articulating these concepts and experiences clearly and concisely.

Ask why Scrum? There are a lot of people that have taken a Scrum course and that’s all they know. Again how the team does the work should be left up to the team doing the work. Maybe the team or teams would work better in a Kanban framework or XP.

Don't forget- it's always okay to ask for the interviewer to come back to a question later on in the interview if you draw a blank! Say something like- "I've drawn blank due to interview nerves, would you mind revisiting this question toward the end of the interview"? This buys you time and your brain will be processing your answer while you move on!

It depends on the nature of work. If it's predictable and can be planned into sprints, then Scrum is a good framework. But most teams deal with BAU activities that typically are not predictable and take at least 20% of the work capacity. In that case Scrumban or Kanban might be a better choice. Ultimately the team needs to experiment and stick to what works. Never be too religious about it. It it ain't working change it.

The most important aspect to understand about Scrum is its purpose. Scrum is designed to build complex products with better quality, more quickly. It achieves this by operating within an agile culture of continuous improvement and respect. The agile culture, in turn, considers human beings the single most important aspect of every organization and is largely inspired by the Toyota Production System of the late 1950s.

One of the most important part of Scrum is Retrospective, people don’t take it seriously and don’t share inputs. It is a responsibility of Scrum Master to make environment comfortable and initiate conversation for all went well and what can be improved points. These point are very important to improve future sprints and resolve possible risks early.

While these are not necessarily specific to Scrum, they are important topics: - The Agile Manifesto: All Agile methodologies and ceremonies can be tied back to these values and principles. - Agile is an adjective (descriptive): It describes a state of being - you don't DO agile, you ARE agile. Scrum, XP, Kanban, etc. are simply methodologies designed to help teams BECOME and REMAIN agile. - Methodologies are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Some of the most successful Scrum teams I've worked with have incorporated both swarming and pair-programming into how they work. - Each team will develop their own identity, which embodies that team's personality and culture, and should be allowed to grow and evolve organically.
