I have been on both sides of the table so I would like to add my 2 cents. Give them ample learning opportunities is a key. Sponsoring trainings and certifications is a must. Also, encouraging them to attend conferences to share knowledge and learn from other orgs. Ensure that Data engineers don’t get stuck in mundane tasks but use their thinking hat often. Doing POCs on new tech keeps them highly motivated even if that is not shipped to production.

In most instances, high work pressure and deteriorating work life balance contributes to engineers looking out for alternate opportunities. It’s a different thing that most competitive work places end up having high octane work style. One of the primary role of people managers is to strive for improvement of work life balance for their team. One-on-Ones are also powerful tools to gauge specific patterns which may not be very obvious in a group. Finally, compensation plays a defining role in retention of talents. Organisations need to make sure that associates are always at par with respect to overall benefits available to employees when compared to competing organisations.
