What are transferrable skills gained through volunteering that are relevant to all industries?

In my experience employees and people in general view volunteering as a “chore” kind of like homework when in reality it provides transferable skills like leadership, time management communication , teamwork, and punctuality which. All industries are looking for in their employees and recruits.

Volunteering is an excellent way to hone customer service, interpersonal communication, networking, clerical, and computer/Microsoft Office skills. Additionally, Volunteer work can provide additional work references and recommendations that can lead to work. The most important thing to remember is that volunteer experience is real experience that can be added to your resume to enhance your work history!

Volunteering is a dynamic ability that is needed across all industries. Since this varies from the kind of volunteering you are in, the skills might also differentiate accordingly. However, the most common skills would be Interpersonal skills, Adaptability, Problem solving, Teamwork and coordination, Collaboration, learning and development, cross functional experience, and project handling.

As a volunteer coordinator, there are lots of transferable skills in volunteering. The opportunity to use initiative, be proactive, work alone or as part of a team, lead, mentor others. You learn to collaborate and work with people outside your comfort zone, while strategically moving everyone towards achieving project goals and targets. You get to develop project management skills, learn to inspire others, think on your feet and be analytical. One very critical skill l picked up is ability to improvise. You learn to find the simplest yet effective ways of dealing with project issues, you get to be innovative! You adapt to situations thereby enhancing your flexibility. And you get to transfer all these and more to your next role.

You can make volunteering as passive or active as you want. If you want to expand your Leadership skills, step up and head-up an activity or committee. Now you've got stronger experience, you've made new connections, and you've given back. Win- win ??!
