What are the top ways to show that you are a good decision maker in Import/Export Operations?

Apart from being tech savvy, an accomplished decision maker in import/export services is always open to challenges, skillful to filter data and categorize risks associated with its due proximity. Should be a creator of opportunities rather than kicking one’s heels as it will affect the whole supply chain. Willingness to collaborate with maiden clients and openness to contemporary methods will leverage the decision making power.

Data analysis is very important, but not the main thing from my point of view. information without action is not useful. but of course it is very important to get maximum information about the situation on the battlefield

I agree, however the data that is being analyzed must be accurate. Incorrect data is just as good as no data. It is important to set internal organization SOP’s that all agents follow in order to have the most reliable data. In addition being savvy with a live TMS or cargo tracking software such as Cargowise can show great decision making, by recognizing data that might affect shipments. Know how to spot them and avoid future issues.

Data analysis is profoundly important operationally as you study YOY, MOM and daily trends in rise and fall of volume, productivity, manpower, inventory and hours needed to successfully and effectively accomplish your goals. It also helps you find your weak spots and provide clues for problem solving. It also helps us to stay ahead in a knowledgable way to demands that may otherwise be placed on us in less beneficial ways. As an operation manager, I have a better insight and understanding of what improvements are needed and how to effectively achieve these successes. Remember data should never be the only tool used in decision making. We can never lose sight of our team members abilities, strengths/weakness and the need for training.

To add to the previous question on good decision making, being saavy in cargo tracking softwares and analyzing accurate data can alleviate a lot risk. Proper planning, tracking, and management can avoid problematic outcomes as well and contribute to bottom line profit. Also contributes to great customer service by limiting risk with similar future shipments.

I completely agree. This is a skill that can come in one of two ways, naturally or taught. I sometimes need to remind myself that what seems so blatantly obvious to me, may not be to others. So I need to slow down and explain it kindly and teach it in a way that my listener can understand it. Life in a 1st world country does not always teach us to think outside of the box. If you don't have tool then you run to the store but what if you can't do that?

A strong partnership from my point of view is the main factor in success. the right partner with clear agreements between you strengthens you many times over. you have a huge number of options for action. And you also have the peace of mind that in a difficult or critical situation you will not be left alone and that you will be a coherent team

I spend a lot of time on reflection, analysing what was effective and what was not. from my point of view, this distinguishes a master from a good performer. our mistakes allow us to develop if we look at them from the right point of view. not blaming ourselves, but giving ourselves the opportunity to become stronger. and of course it is very important to praise ourselves for what worked well. i often forget this myself.
