Additionally, platforms like Monday.com and Jira have proven invaluable, each offering unique strengths tailored to the specific nature of the project at hand.

There are plethora of tools available in the market but effective resource allocation should be part of project planning. Effective project planning comes from knowing the pulse of the project in terms of business value, technology & skillset, size, schedule & budget. Resource allocation planning should ensure the resources (personnel, tools & licenses, material etc) are available at the right time as per set schedule. Simplest tool for resource capacity planning are excel sheets but Jira, MS Project & platforms like Monday.com are also widely used.

I believe my preferred project management software is still Microsoft Project. Microsoft has been doing a great job providing short, concise tutorials and efficient virtual help desks. Additionally, other websites like YouTube offer more in-depth tutorials on how to use the program.

In my opinion, the training material should be in-built in any software. For example, "help-text cloud" which appears when a user hovers over an icon is very useful. Similarly, providing short videos (less than 20 seconds) which are specific to a particular window or a page can be very powerful.

Support and training is an ongoing process, as the solution requirements change as the project progresses and the gap arises in the current and expected expertise or knowledge. And these gaps cab be seen on the information radiators where the user or the resource update the data in real time, monitored and analysed for performance and feedback. And where such gap arises, the performance drops and could affect the project delivery, resulting into termination or stretch. So, there are tools out in the market that could help in maintaining resource calendar, which could tells us about the knowledge gap, skill set availability etc. Some of them are Asana, monday.com, Zoho projects, Ms projects etc.

A common scenario in project management is for a project manager to have go-to people for certain things. For example, they have a good relationship with someone in IT, who they like to use for all tech-related tasks. As good as it is to have someone you can rely on, that doesn't mean they're the best person for all tech jobs. That person might be a front-end web developer who can do back-end work, but not as well as a specialist. A specialist back-end developer would complete that work quicker, to a higher standard, with less chance of needing to go back and re-do any inadequate aspect of the work.

I hope the next breed of features will be integrating AI to resource allocation softwares to predict the suitable resources and even predict the estimated time to complete tasks based on historical data on team’s velocity.
