Health providers have very different training from case workers and social workers. They are working from algorithms, and ongoing series of If.. then but only if… Practice your active listening skills with them - begin where they are, listen. Then ask good questions about the impact/consequences. They may need your input to think through the consequences of starting a medication regime that isn’t covered by insurance or engaging a particularly vulnerable person with socioeconomic needs that may need to be addressed first. A few good questions - based on the client’s lived experience and competing compelling priorities - may help the provider weigh alternatives and be responsive to the integrated needs of the person in their environment.

It is so important to understand a "patient" - let's face it a person's history. Can they afford this medication, will they have somewhere to store it, do they have the tools to follow instructions? It is important to consider how to encourage compliance with an intervention, not just prescribe an intervention. This is where team based care comes in. It allows providers and provider support roles to work together with the person at the middle ensuring compliance, education, understanding and engagement.
