As a chief information officer (CIO), you are expected to lead the IT function and align it with the strategic goals of your organization. Today most of the companies are technology driven, regardless of the industry, therefore the CIO role is crucial on bringing the balance to the Executive Leadership table to enable the company strategy as most of the strategic initiatives will be driven by technology.
I would say the biggest thing that is required is the ability to communicate with BOTH the other C-level executives AND the technical IT team. I consider our role as vCISO to be that of translator between the two areas in order to bring a more focused and understood strategic vision that meets corporate requirements while not giving away cybersecurity.
First and most important aspect of a CIO is to embed themselves in the business day to day . For example for a supply chain company, the CIO should understand the end to end process even if it’s nothing related to technology and then find ways to help either automate those processes or bring advancements. The more time they spend on becoming the business stakeholder first , the more enabling the organisation can see from the technology that person would bring.
Most important is unlearn & being a life long learner otherwise you will be a biased as a Leader based on your past roles. You may have elevated to CIO role from a Infra ladder or Application ladder or security ladder etc., but when you became CIO it's no more past, it's about future. Another important skill required is change driver otherwise you can't do digital transformation in true sense. I have seen HR/CEOs preferring people from same industry to join the leadership role, that person will come with a biased or set mindset & you will expect him to start delivering from day 1 but do you really think that such people will think out of the box and bring something new in true sense be it strategy or best practice or they just replicate
In my opinion, the key skill for a CIO is communications. This role is essential in providing the link between the infotech supporting the applications and the people that are using it to achieve real-world outcomes. Specifically: -communicating corporate strategy, objectives and progress to the technology teams - articulating the technology strategies...and how they dovetail with corporate strategy to deliver real-world benefits - explaining complex technical issues to executive management using everyday analogies - providing timely feedback to the team on projects - providing frank and clear feedback to vendors on their performance - coaching and guiding direct reports - building respectful relationships with stakeholders and the team
Another essential competency for a CIO is innovation and change management, which means being able to identify, evaluate, and implement new technologies and solutions that can create competitive advantage and improve efficiency and effectiveness. You need to be able to foster a culture of innovation and experimentation in your IT team, and manage the risks and challenges of change. You also need to be able to collaborate with other leaders and departments to ensure alignment and integration of IT initiatives across the organization.
Strategic planning: The ability to develop and execute a long-term vision for the organization's technology infrastructure. Change management: The ability to lead the organization through large-scale IT initiatives and manage the associated change.

This involves empowering the IT team to explore new ideas and approaches, and providing the resources and support necessary for innovation. Innovation and change management as a competency encompasses a blend of technical skills, strategic thinking, leadership qualities, and collaborative abilities. It's about not just keeping up with technological evolution, but actively driving it in a way that propels the organization forward while mitigating risk.
The CIO should lead with the example in all the areas of the Business. The CIO should be always looking for the Innovation not only in the technology aspects but also in the processes within a Business.
CIO use technology to create new and better ways to do things inside the company or make the company's products better. Each step of "making better" is an innovation, small or large. CIO looks for problems the company has and uses technology to fix them or make something really new that nobody thought of before.
Change management should also include effectiveness reviews of what was changed/implemented. Evaluate if what you did achieved your goals and if it is still meeting your needs. You can’t be afraid to change course again if what was changed/implemented no longer fulfills your business need.
A third critical competency for a CIO is people and relationship management, which means being able to attract, develop, and retain a talented and diverse IT workforce, and build trust and rapport with your staff, peers, and senior executives. You need to be able to delegate, empower, and motivate your IT team, and provide them with clear direction and feedback. You also need to be able to influence and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders, and manage conflicts and expectations.
Put your hubris in check. Getting to this level proves you have knowledge and skill, but remember there is always someone that knows more than you on any given subject, embrace that and learn all you can. Working with those around you to make sure you and they are the best you can be is key to building successful partnerships with peers, subordinates and partners.

Startups and established entities have distinct requirements. For mature organizations, minor adjustments suffice, while new business lines demand strategic planning, innovation, and self-awareness. Nevertheless, people management consistently takes the top spot. IT transcends technology; it's about people. Trust from internal, external staff, vendors, and business stakeholders is essential to implement strategies. These components aren't separate but overlap in a Venn diagram of success.

A fourth key competency for a CIO is technical expertise and knowledge, which means being able to understand the current and emerging technologies and trends that are relevant to your organization and industry. You need to be able to evaluate and select the best IT solutions and vendors for your needs, and ensure the quality and security of your IT systems and processes. You also need to be able to leverage your technical skills and knowledge to solve problems and support decision making.
The best people always want to work with the best people, the best people build the best teams, the best teams build the best companies. In the tech world you are working with an incredibly diverse group of personas and many of them do not have the skills nor the desire to lead and grow an organization yet they are key to creating the technology to give you the edge to stay atop the technology leaderboard. These extremely bright technical minds can see incompetence and predict how it will impact them instantly, it is CRITICAL for the senior leadership to demonstrate their technical prowess and understanding or clearly subrogate the technical thought leadership.

Technical knowledge has to be to a level that the CIO can understand the impacts and benefits of applying it for an organization. This means knowing a little about a lot and how the puzzle pieces fit together can be extremely beneficial.

Innovation: The ability to identify and capitalize on new technology opportunities that can provide competitive advantage. Leadership: The ability to inspire and motivate teams to achieve organizational goals. Financial management: The ability to manage IT budgets and resources effectively.

It involves evaluating and selecting appropriate IT solutions and vendors, ensuring quality and security of IT systems and processes. One thing I've found particularly helpful is actively seeking and embracing feedback, both from my team and peers. This has been instrumental in identifying areas where I can improve. There was one time at work, for example, when feedback highlighted my need for more inclusive decision-making. This led me to adopt a more collaborative approach, which not only enhanced our project outcomes but also fostered a stronger team dynamic. Each experience, challenge, and feedback loop is an opportunity to grow and become a more effective leader in the dynamic field of IT.
"Speak the business language" when talking to the business, which takes few forms for me: ? Articulate the value of an initiative – the “WHY” ? Build a business case around any new initiatives – the “WHAT” ? Deliver through iterations – the “HOW” All these whiles being able to understand technology concepts when being briefed or attending sessions with IT leaders or partners (note that I did not use the work "technical", rather “technology”).

One thing I find helpful is 360-degree feedback, from the manager, peers and reporting employees. I also think it's good to track results and compare them with results over time. For example, what was important some time ago (a year or more) may no longer be important today. Practically, it can be one Excel in which you save the results and update them after 1:1 meetings. Very helpful and helps draw appropriate conclusions.
Self and recurring self assessment is a necessity for CIO's. The CIO Competency Framework is a good starting point. Keeping up to date with the business as it evolves is also a necessity to enable the alignment of technological innovations with business evolution. Every CIO must set aside time for self assessment to establish a learning program in both categories of business and technology.
In assessing my IT leadership, I focus on practical outcomes and stakeholder feedback. Beyond theoretical models like SIM’s CIO Competency Framework, I measure success through KPIs linked to strategic initiatives. Projects that enhance operational efficiency or reduce costs are key indicators. Real-world impact, supported by data and team testimonials, validates my leadership. This approach, enriched by direct feedback from peers and reports, is central to my continuous development and demonstration of effective CIO competencies. Last but not least, In assessing my IT leadership skills, I’ve found a blend of self-reflection and external feedback crucial. Tools like 360-degree reviews and personality tests offer valuable insights.

The role of the CIO nowadays has to place far more impetus on the I being Innovation however without the business, strategy and commercial acumen to prioritise business changes that unlock value to enable reinvestment in funding continuous change most will fail to drive forward momentum as perceived by the business and board. It is critical for the CIO to be enabling the organisation to adapt the business to be a technology company first and embracing game changing technology safely today being ai but also considering nascent areas like quantum tomorrow. This means leading changing and adapting fusion teams that are driving against a clear joint vision which is where the human empathetic side comes into play.
STRATEGY & GOVERNANCE: Considering today’s dynamic environment, effective implementation of these competencies is foundational for delivery excellence. Whilst understanding the organization’s aspirations/objectives, developing an aligned IT Strategic Roadmap to support enterprise objectives, is where the rubber meets the road. This provides a clear pathway for successfully achieving stakeholders' and shareholders' needs. Governance ensures effective oversight/management of the IT organization by defining the right structures and framework to continually evaluate, direct, and monitor the IT shop for alignment with the approved IT strategic delivery. This guarantees value realization via optimal risk and resource utilization.
