Challenges, Opportunities and Trends for Scholarly Publishing

The scholarly publishing procedure comprises of academic content creation, reviewing, sharing it with the academic community and public via reputed journals, and preserving it for future.

There are four players involved in this process:

1.????Scholar writers who create (research and write) the academic content,

2.????Editor and peer reviewer who screen submissions, review content, suggest revisions for enhancement, interact and correspond with authors, and freeze the final copy,

3.????Publishers whose role is to bring the journal into the market,

4.????Subscribers are institutions and libraries who buy the publications and allow the scholars and students in their community to access the same.

Challenges and Opportunities

·???????Increasing cost: For over 30 years, the cost of publications has spiralled upward, deterring libraries in their quest to buy journals/books of most value for their customers. Commercial publishers encourage libraries to buy packages vis-à-vis individual titles, which often are not required by the academic community.

·???????Monopolies: Mergers and acquisitions among commercial publishers have created virtual monopolies in some disciplines.

·???????Growing volume of research: Statistics indicate to the doubling of knowledge every 15 years and a concurrent increase in the volume of scientific research. This renders to more pages, more titles, and more pressure on the peer review system. As with all challenges, opportunities reveal themselves on the other side. The biggest, most obvious, and most exciting opportunity is, of course, Open Access (OA).

·???????Open Access: Revolutionary in making research open, accessible, and affordable, it is the entire body of academic literature freely available online for use. The content ranges from the freely available content with no restriction to content not to be reused without permission to peer reviewed articles to accepted versions placed in digital repositories.

o??Since the outbreak of the COVID-19, Open Access (OA) has been a catalyst in scientific advancement. Publishers helped accelerate peer reviews of COVID-19 research papers and put them up online for free.

Emerging Trends

·???????Artificial intelligence (AI) being all-pervasive, can be deployed in academic publishing:

o??Sort through a surge of research papers using natural language processing to help find the right document, data, and information

o??Help correct language, grammar, scientific tone, and style

o??Know trending research topics

o??Select relevant citations

o??Check for plagiarism and inaccurate data

o??Make academic content discoverable with voice search

o??Help in peer review

·???????Inclusive openness facilitates the research outputs to be able to review and evaluate processes, methods, and data.

·???????Transformative agreements (TA) contribute to growth in open-access publishing.

Great piece and thanks for sharing. I'm looking at publishing my doctoral dissertation based on leveraging entrepreneurship to address youth unemployment and poverty in the developing economies. Maybe we could collaborate. Thanks
