I see business development as being similar to farming. As a business development representative, we plant the seeds of new opportunities for the company, nurturing and caring for them to ensure everyone has enough work, like bread on the table. It's about identifying and pursuing chances, building relationships, and creating value propositions. Just like a farmer aligns activities with the seasons, I align business development with the organization's goals and vision. The aim is not just closing deals but contributing to the long-term growth and success of the company. It's a strategic process, much like cultivating a field, ensuring a fruitful harvest for everyone.

Business development will have different meanings to different people, for me some of what I think when I hear the words business development are : - Relationship building; getting to know your customer. Understand their business, their objective, their challenges; all without actually positioning your business. This can be achieved utilising AI, using LinkedIn and seeing why their business is in the news - but most importantly speaking with them directly. - Understand the industry your customer sits, there will be industry challenges that resonate with your customer that you can discuss. - Thinking about the customers' objectives building out a road map that will take them to "utopia" with a defined strategy on how you will do it

I see Sales / Business Development activities as a "Number Game" where "Quantity defines Quality". Never measure your "Success" in something that you can't control. So I measure my performance into 3 metrics. 1. Result: The sales target that I want to achieve (Revenue, number of clients acquired, etc) 2. KPI: Metrics/ Process needed to achieve the results (Number of proposals sent, Number of meetings etc) 3. KPA: Action that you need to do to get your KPI and result (Number of message sent, Number of email sent, Number of reach outs etc) Put and celebrate your success in your KPA. Then you will become less stressed and easily achieve your KPI and results.
