What technology tools can you use to analyze your audience for public speaking?

Administering an online survey or poll before a talk and sharing the results as part of the talk is powerful way to engage the audience. A survey given after a talk should be short and to the point in order to avoid survey fatigue.

Anything quick for people where they can answer quickly - and allowing a free form for anyone wanting to add a longer perspective

Consider tools like Mentimeter, that can be used throughout a live talk. Ideal for upping engagement, understanding areas of audience interest and more. It’s quick, live and the realtime results are a crowd pleaser. Gives you, the presenter, the chance to focus content if you designed questions in that way. Just be mindful of the inevitable slide fumble as you shift back and forth to show results.

On a subject of my interest, I would first assess the mass sitting before me Secondly, a well researched subject only can sustain a speaker, so as a Trainer for last 50 years, I know which way to deal and how to utmost please my audience by sheer knowledge and intelligence

I have also held “whiteboard sessions” with a smaller group who represents my target audience. More personal than surveys and you can dive deeper into somebody’s feedback if needed. This can also drive those individuals who attended the whiteboard session to encourage others to join my presentation. Quick surveys after are fine, but mention they will be sent out towards the end of your presentation.

I use social media to test positioning and timing of content BEFORE I do my presentation. That way delivery is relevant on the day.

I use social media to understand my audience more effectively. As I learn more about listening to people, I craft my discussions and ideas based on the actual needs of our culture and society.

Social media is a powerful tool to do audience research and initiate conversations. Before the speech: you can find out who will be in the audience and gather stories and case studies that you can weave into your presentation. Every audience is delighted when they feel a presentation is 'just for them' - if you name check a couple of people in the room, with specific examples from their social media posts, you will have gone above and beyond. Post-event, social media is a good way to reinforce your points, share handouts, create FOMO for non-attendees and generate interesting your next speech. If there is a photographer, ALWAYS make sure you get the pics. Anyone can SAY they speak about a topic, not so many can SHOW it.

If anyone has tools that does any of the things in this section, please post here. I've been using presentation tools since 2011 and haven't found anything that does this well (including the new AI based tools). I've resorted to manual tracking (some mentioned here further down but there is a character limit for responses)

I have relied on Social media and the organisation. Ultimately my favourite way is to speak with the audience before and after my talk.

I agree with Jon Yeo, however tech tools come into play either before or after with feedback to analyise outcomes fir the event and or future topics to be presented and of course tracking sales all within our current CRM We are also starting to use AI to respond to the data once complied. We are finding sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t

I've seen a few speakers working off a script written by generative AI. My tips: Fact check. AI doesn't care if it's wrong. Read it out loud. AI doesn't care if you look foolish onstage. Your audience is there to have a conversation, not to see you read from a script. HINT: ask your AI for bullet points or a speech outline, not a script.

Gen AI, like ChatGPT, is great using it with a persona. You might have heard that you can using it and prompting to assume a certain persona (this can be extract of the sum of all persons of a target group or a real person like Albert Einstein). And then you could chat with that persona. So you might prompting the AI to act as the persona you are expecting as an attendee of the event you are speaking at. Just ask it about the kind of performance you are going to deliver. This is your chance to market research without having to ask the real attendees. There’s a lot of evidence that these kind of answers are statistically relevant.

Any recommendations for analysing emotions and personality? I've not found any. Also "communicate with your audience in a personalized way"

I second using generative AI to develop personas (more than one) to tailor content. 1. Ask AI to develop personas based on what you know about your audience, 2. Provide it with information about your presentation (topic, main points), 3. Ask it questions like: - What will these personas most want to learn? - What does this presentation not cover that they may want to hear? - What will resonate with each persona the most? - What are words or phrases related to this subject that could trigger a negative reaction? - What are the most practical applications of my presentation for this audience? - How can I conclude this presentation in an impactful way for this audience?

I'm not yet convinced any technology is sufficient to measure online effectiveness and I've been testing tools for this exact purpose over 10 years. In 2011, YouTube used to tell you when someone would Pause, Rewind or Abandon a video and tell you exactly when it happened. You could work out weak points from that data You should track -% of audience engaged through chat or face recognition - time to respond to things you say -identify key stakeholders and determine if they are engaged so they don't lead or distract others away -know when to change content, dynamic or format of the presentation in real time Only humans can do this at the moment. We can nearly double an already high Net Promotor Score (55) using this technique (98)

Social media listening tools can help you track what people are saying about your presentation on social media in real time. This information can be used to identify any areas where you need to improve or make adjustments.

Artificial intelligence IBM Watson Tone Analyzer ChatGPT Google Bard Clarabridge Based on the information you collect from these tools, you can tailor your presentation to your audience's needs. For example, you could focus on different topics depending on your audience's experience level and job search goals. You could also use different language and tone based on your audience's emotional state.

Some helpful tips I’ve learned along the way- 1. Let the audience know the purpose of your presentation. 2. Honor the expectations you set for the meeting. Could be timeframe, content, etc 3. Keep the audience engaged with polls and Q&A. 4. Provide the audience a way to give feedback on your presentation once complete. Example- Set expectations with a flyer or in the body of a presentation invite with Outlook. I personally like virtual through Teams. There’s tons of settings to host a great meeting. You can add interactive polls, set presenter features, chat or Q&A, and record attendance. Any action items I take away from the presentation I get back within 24 hours. I send a Microsoft Form to collect feedback. I hope this helps!
