What techniques do you use to create an inclusive work culture?

I always believe we should start with data. From the data presented, we can determine the most effective approach to creating an inclusive work environment. The data in question can include long-term organizational goals, the current capabilities of our employees to support organizational achievement, and the extent to which inclusive boundaries are desired within the organization.

To cultivate an inclusive work culture, organizations should begin by fostering leadership commitment and offering regular diversity and inclusion training. Celebrating diversity, offering inclusive benefits, and promoting work-life balance are essential for creating an inclusive environment. You must think about how to attract, retain and motivate your people ensuring everyone feels represented and valued for their uniqueness.

To foster an inclusive work culture, the leadership team should commence by actively engaging with team members, creating a safe environment for candid feedback. Subsequently, they should carefully evaluate these insights and prioritize actionable steps that drive organizational progress. For instance, designing flexible work schedules that consider individual roles, accommodate new parents, and address relocation needs can be a valuable initiative.

In practice up to now, the main thing I have always emphasized is to keep open communication with people. To monitor how they integrate, how they feel, whether the company's values and vision are recognized and to involve them in talking to me about the subject without having any concerns. It is very important to allow them to see the big picture, it motivates and engages very well.

If Org has its vision, mission and goals in place, would suggest beginning with discussing to employees what is their interpretation about it. There are two possible answers, 1. They know and 2. They don't know. In the first case, If employees are aligned with Org goal, ask them how do they wish to achieve and provide them necessary resources. In the second case, when they don't know, redefine goals along with them in their language and then find ways to achieve it. This is beginning of building inclusive culture from Business Context. The other way is to train leaders on how can they create psychological space for people to feel safe enough to speak & share.

My experience has shaped my confident believe that strong Leadership buy-in is the mere minimum when comes to building such deep cultural imperatives like Inclusivity. I would say, Leaders should believe in those imperatives with full brain and heart, take it truly as central mindset principle, and guidance to all actions. Important to have Leaders showing every day, with every smallest action, how important this is for them, and support actions with words: explanations, notices, feedback, declaration.

Answering the "Why" is the key. Also answering "WIIFM - Whats in it for me?" is also key to ensuring you secure leadership commitment. Not only securing commitment, they need to lead the change and we consultants help connect the dots

To drive inclusivity, company should have such a value system where people are encouraged to share ideas or opinions without any fear. Values like Bravery can be driven which says “Be brave enough to share your ideas or thoughts “ and each person should understand the true meaning and most importantly Leadership should accept it. In today’s world where people believe in Right to speak, everyone should have feel free to express themselves. But they should also be told to do the things the right way and not be disrespectful to others.

In my experience this is the most vital part in the whole process of creating inclusive workplace culture, if you can show the top level leadership the benefits and the impact then you will get a fast support. I always tend to speak through numbers and brand powers, if the leadership thinks strategically then you can go further. For example set a clear numbers for rewarding inclusion and incentives vs the retention rate and employee’s willingness to contribute accountability.

In my experience, leaders have the ability to cultivate an inclusive work environment by demonstrating respect, collaboration, and open-mindedness through their actions. By attentively listening to employee's thoughts, leaders can ensure that each person's input is being considered. When expectations are clearly outlined, it provides a framework for diverse ideas and perspectives to be shared and developed. Constructive feedback is also crucial for growth and progress, inspiring continuous improvement. I believe that these practices foster a workplace where everyone feels valued and treated equitably.

One cannot underestimate the impact that promoting, understanding and appreciation around DEI programs have among employees. A program focused on identifying and addressing biases within one of my organizations left such a profound impact on our colleagues' thought processes that it prompted us to consider the value of consistently engaging in such discussions and dialogues. We now believe that fostering an ongoing dialogue will significantly expand our horizons and foster greater openness and acceptance.

Psychological safety can be 'taught' and nudged through training programs. We run a program that helps organisations and their people feel comfortable to hold crucial/difficult conversations, give feedback, tell stories and bring to light what behaviours do they need to create the right environment to promote inclusivity of thought and people.

The third step is to educate employees on inclusion through training programs, workshops, and resources covering diversity, bias, empathy, collaboration, and conflict resolution. Facilitate open dialogue and feedback sessions, and promote mentoring and peer support for employee learning and development.

This education will only be fruitful if people already have the awareness plus desire to change. These two steps have to be addressed first for training not to be a waste of time, money and company resources.

Consistently valuing diversity benefits work culture through different perspectives. Open communication channels promote employee participation.

Empowerment is about trust and direction. The role of the leader is to set the direction and be super clear on what are we trying to do, why are we trying to do it and the expectation of the ultimate goal. It is then up to them to allow the team to work out how to get there and trust in them to work it out.

DEI is evolving and now shifting to DIB therefore, We need to look at how our managers behave and see if they are open to making a friendly and inclusive environment. Just having goals for DEI is not enough. Many companies have these goals in place, but we must keep reminding everyone that having a diverse and inclusive culture is not only in line with what we believe in but also helps the company a lot in the long run. It certainly yields long-term benefits for the company in terms of innovation & growth.

I believe the responsibility/belongingness comes with empowerment and viceversa. Empowering an individual or a team of employees can give the scope of growing day by day and can become chain reaction of ownership thought process among the team. This can happen with less control/No micro management, with periodic update sharing and industry standard compliance process.

Following up with action plans & executing them after conducting an Employee Satisfaction Survey not only empowers employees to voice out their ideas and concerns, but this makes them feel that the leaders are hearing their sentiments and are ready to respond. It is not enough to just collect data, issues that can be resolved should be addressed transparently in front of the entire company. Each employee on each department has distinct skills and approaches that other employees (even leaders) can learn from. It is HR's responsibility to create those channels to bridge the leaders with their employees.

Empowerment is a must for any success as it involves the people. Rather than passing instructions. Empowerment makes people responsible, triggers their thought process and encourages to be innovative. Empowerment level can be defined as per organizational structure.

Sharing and soliciting feedback on successful inclusion is most promising in my eyes. Different ways to promoting the wanted culture are best to be used regularly and for some length of time. Best with visible interest and involvement from top management.

On our regular satisfaction surveys, I added a final question that asks "If you would like to extend your thanks/kudos to a particular employee, please write them here". The amount of positivity coming from employees and managers alike was astounding. We then send it to the members addressed to make them feel their value not only towards the obvious (Revenue, Sales, Targets, Milestones), but even the successes in their everyday tasks with their fellow teammates. Sometimes, small gestures of appreciation are enough to make a day for an employee.

This is my favorite! celebrating successes and recognizing the efforts of our teams requires a professional approach, which includes publicly acknowledging and appreciating individual and collective achievements, conducting periodic reward and recognition programs, and also organizing meaningful team-building activities or events to celebrate milestones.

Identify and showcase best practices, stories, and outcomes that exemplify inclusion. Establish recognition programs, awards, events, and initiatives that celebrate diversity and inclusion. Encourage feedback and testimonials that illustrate the positive impact and value of inclusion.

After a demanding event or task, we as a group try to promote a review meeting of our work but often try to schedule space to relax and talk about funny things that happened. Sometimes, this small space to chill among us helps to release stress and find things to improve or to remark that an indicator survey could not show.

Any new initiative is incomplete without implementation and then monitoring the progress. Similarly, the consequent tracking of how the inclusive approach works is of prime importance. the synergic impact of the new initiatives will make you know how the progress of the approach is. Monitoring do not mean micro-management, but as a leader it means to keep involved and handle any inhibits in inclusivity.

Any initiative should have a road map for implementation followed by progress monitoring and feedback & subsequent feedback action. And this should be a continuous cycle.

Zero Tolerance: Enforce strict anti-discrimination policies. Transparency: Share diversity metrics and goals. Leadership Development: Train leaders in inclusivity. Collaboration: Encourage teamwork and social events. Accommodations: Provide reasonable accommodations. Continuous Improvement: Review and refine practices. Intersectionality: Consider the overlap of diverse dimensions in policies.

Before you can measure progress you need to have set goals. Assess the culture to identify areas of strengths and areas needing improvement. Then set goals to amplify the strengths and improve areas of weakness.

We are talking about how to create a more inclusive culture or how to approach an organizational culture project? Most of the answers are on how to approach a culture project, and some top tips were already added by other contributors. For me, on how to create a more inclusive culture, my best tip would be to take into consideration that culture is translated by the workers on how to act in a specific situation based on a set of assumptions from the organization's values, the workplace itself or either based on what they understand as valued by their peers. So if want to create a more inclusive culture just start to spread inclusion as a value from the top down, from mission statements to learning and then performance...

Inclusion happens one person at a time, one interaction at a time. While policies are helpful, ultimately it boils down to the overt and subtle signals the associate receives when at work. This could be as simple as being looked at in the eye when an opinion is being sought to being included for Friday lunch plans. Inclusion lies in the view of the receiver, and therefore from an organizational perspective it is often a challenge to translate policies that have good intentions to impact on the ground. Inclusion thrives in being consciously aware of diversity in all its possible forms, and the onus lies on the one with formal or informal power in groups to actively drive this value.

Great article! There are so many factors to consider when considering strategies for DIB. Empathy and being genuine in the need for change is at your forefront. Having world class frameworks on paper will not be successful if they are just “tick box” exercises. Your People will become resentful and resistant if they are seen as marketing tools for business.

Awareness & Enablement of associates who are Neurodiverse. Neurodiversity is an area which people do not have too much knowledge about. This converts to myths & misconceptions and subsequently to exclusion of this community

Building psychological safety in the teams would be key to creating an inclusive work culture. There are a lot of team building activities that aim to build psychological safety which can be used. Further, the teams should be trained to use various ideation techniques like brainstorming, brain writing etc. so that all team member voices and ideas can be heard and discussion is not centered around only the loudest voices in the team.
