What techniques can you use to measure stress in materials non-destructively?

Non-destructive stress measurement techniques include: 1- X-ray Diffraction (XRD): Measures atomic plane spacing changes. 2- Neutron Diffraction: Penetrates deeper than XRD. 3- Magnetic Methods: Includes Barkhausen Noise and Magnetoelastic Effect. 4- Ultrasonic Methods: Measures changes in wave velocity. 5- Hole-Drilling Method: Measures deformation around a small hole. 6- Digital Image Correlation (DIC): Uses optical images to calculate strain. 7- Raman Spectroscopy: Detects stress via shifts in Raman peaks. 8- Electromagnetic Methods: Measures electrical property changes. 9- Thermoelastic Stress Analysis (TSA): Uses infrared thermography. 10- Photoelasticity: Observes stress patterns with polarized light.

Non- destructive methods to study stresses in a material definitely would be XRD, depending upon the amount of stress created as well as the material shape and size. Typically for bulk material XRD works perfectly but for more precise analysis one could go for synchtron and or neutron diffraction method. These method will provide in depth details about the material stress label.and change in crystal structure due to stress. Lastly to validate one may check electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and Transmission microscopy techiniques (STEM and electron diffraction) to visualize the stresses in a crystal/grains.

X-ray diffraction provides an objective data for quality control evaluation. This how I would measure the residual stresses without destroying the material.

When a material is subjected to stress, its XRD patterns change due to the atoms' rearrangement in the crystal lattice. For a more profound understanding, consider utilizing neutron diffraction, which can offer comprehensive insights into internal stress. This method is especially effective for large and thick materials.

Ultrasonic testing can detect flaws and discontinuities in the internal structure of materials. Ultrasonic waves travel through the material and reflect at specific times, according to the material's sound velocity. If there is a change in the reflected wave, it can be identified as a change in the internal structure of the inspected area. This allows us to infer the stress that may have been applied to the material

Ultrasonic testing (UT): This technique uses high-frequency sound waves to travel through the material. The speed and direction of the sound waves can be affected by stress. By analyzing these changes, UT can be used to identify areas of stress concentration and estimate the stress levels.

Acoustic emission (AE) is the phenomenon of radiation of acoustic (elastic) waves in solids that occurs when a material undergoes irreversible changes in its internal structure, for example as a result of crack formation or plastic deformation due to aging, temperature gradients, or external mechanical forces.

The ultrasonic method is safe for both the operator and the test sample, although there are some limitations.Perfectly detects cracks and internal stresses in critical areas of steel parts. Naturally, in practice, the choice of the desired method and its mode of operation significantly depends on both the research material itself and its form. The ultrasound method can be combined with various optical research methods (the sample does not have to be transparent). Stress testing for optically transparent materials is a separate topic.

This method is interesting and could be practical for detecting defects on photovoltaic plates. this method can be used to detect cracks or deformation on modules such as silicon wafers (the subject of my end-of-study internship / Master Materials Science and Engineering Advanced Materials and Nanomaterials)

it’s also a great method to backup any finding of a slightly same principal inspection but yet another method which is eddy current technique.

Stress causes a reversible change in temperature, which can be captured using sensitive infrared cameras. By analyzing the temperature patterns, you can map the stress distribution across the material's surface.

Thermoelastic stress analysis is a linear mapping technique that analysis the stress/strain by observing the change in surface temperature by using the infrared detectors.

An old technique for amorphous transparent material is Photoelasticity, which measure local molecular deformation and orientation with poloarized light.

Raman spectroscopy can be utilized as well. The peaks can shift based on the residual stress in the material. This technique may not be universal though as the material has to have Raman active molecular bonds and it needs to be able to withstand the laser power used to take the measurement.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) and hole-drilling techniques?attract the most attention. XRD has become one of the standard methods for residual stress measurement over the past few decades.?

The combination of techniques can help to capture changes in structure more effectively. The speed of sound in a stressed material is modified and is also related to the dynamic modulus of elasticity. Also, if there is a change in the spacing of the crystal lattice it is effectively captured by XRD. Non-destructive IR methods could reveal the source of stress, eg contamination of concrete with chlorides. Additionally, depending on the nature of the sample (eg organic or inorganic, alloy, concrete, pigment, diamond) Acoustic Microscopy could contribute to the conclusion as well. Finally, the cost would eliminate or allow the possibility to utilize Magnetic Methods.
