The first and best way to mitigate counterfeit is to buy from fully Authorized sources. Ideally, this would be from an authorized source compliant to AS6496 where all product has remained within the authorized channel. Anyone willing to buy excess stock or take returns is not fully AS6496 compliant and could result in mixed stock (product that is authorized and product that has left the authorized channel).

No amount of non-destruct product testing is going to be the same quality of testing as the original manufacturer. Datasheet testing is not the same as OCM (original component manufacturer) testing. The final test program at the OCM is the culmination of every test escape they ever saw and goes way beyond any datasheet testing. You cannot test for counterfeit and catch everything the OCM test program would see. An authentic part could be a used part with less reliability that passes more simple datasheet testing. You cannot test in quality and reliability.

Only buy products from Supplier Authorized Distributors. Look for trackability. Especially on legacy type products that are less complex and easier to counterfeit. Counterfeiters are looking for high volume production products with proven run rate. If the price and availability is too good to be true, it usually is!
