When we are setting realistic goals, we need to help our learners understand that native speakers make mistakes too. The aim is not to be word perfect, the aim is to successfully communicate. Getting students to analyse a short authentic recording of unplanned speech, noting all the pauses, hesitations, grammatical errors, rephrasing etc. that occur can help learners to understand that fluency is about keeping going despite errors rather than being word perfect. So often learners are only exposed to polished, edited recordings of native speakers which are word-perfect. It leaves them with the impression that all their utterances should be perfectly formed too and this can undermine confidence and inhibit their attempts.
In my experience, fear is a great obstacle to students' ability to speak confidently and fluently. Human beings want to be accepted, want to do well and worry about what others think of them. I always tell my students to just speak. You will learn more from having a real-life conversation in which you picked up a word or figured out how to use an expression than from hours in the classroom. Learners should be less hard on themselves and not worry too much about what others will think. People worth talking to will understand if you say you are learning and you want to improve, and they will not focus on errors.
Our strategy is comprised of a few factors: 1) Acquire reliable resources in the target language (Dictionary, Concise Grammar book, samples of the written language - hence our brand of phrasebooks our structured as they are), 2) Immersion - we believe that it is key that the foreign language learner advance their language skills by immersing themselves in the culture itself and by being around native speakers of the language (through immersion one can acquire confidence in speaking the target language and practice fluency through conversation), and finally 3) Practice routinely - One should make it part of their daily routine to practice speaking phrases (if one has some down time and is alone, grab a resource and repeat phrases to oneself)
By Developing a Vivid Ideal L2 Self: Imagine: Create a detailed picture of yourself as a fluent speaker. Where are you using the language? With whom? What are you communicating? The more vivid and specific the image, the stronger its motivational pull. Set Goals: Break down your ultimate image into achievable milestones. Set realistic and challenging goals in different areas (speaking, listening, writing, reading) that move you closer to your ideal self. Focus on Emotions: Connect your L2 learning to positive emotions. Think about the joy of communication, the confidence of fluency, and the satisfaction of achieving your goals. This emotional investment fuels your motivation.
One important thing to remember is not to wait till you are perfect; keep talking even if people laugh at your mistakes. This will help you correct yourself as you go along your journey to fluency and accuracy. Be positive and determined!

I agree that regular practice in language learning is crucial. But not any practice. Not random practice. There must always be clear purpose: What is it that you want to achieve? Where can you use that, How can you make logical connections? Meaningful practice is key to language mastery. To mastering any skill, in fact. There're many interesting exercises you can use: If you're listening to something in English you can: - shadow the speaker (imitate the pronunciation and intonation) if your goal is to work on your pronunciation - repeat interesting parts (whole phrases, not just isolated words) if you want to activate your vocabulary And many, many more. A client recently asked me, "How much practice is enough?" It's not just a matter of how much practice but what strategy / structure, when, under what circumstances / environment...We must prepare our brains and set the stage for learning.
I always encouraged my learners to practice, take advantage of any opportunity that takes them out of their comfort zone and speak even if they make mistakes and struggle because that’s when real learning happens and activates the brain to process the language they have learned in class. A great example is asking where to find something in a store even if they know where it is. In addition, asking for directions and assistance.
Find a native speaker who is willing to record/write down your errors & then review them by asking them to give you the phrase or word in your first language so that you may, in turn, say it in the target language. They should allow you to speak freely and not correct you until you’ve finished speaking.
Goals you set for practice can also be an important part of learning. One has to consciously find opportunities to apply the rules of the language, vocabulary etc in everyday situations. Here we don’t aim for perfection but the goal is to communicate in the given context or situation with the minimal knowledge that you have acquired thus achieving small milestones in your journey.

I always did my best to repeat what my ESL students said without the mistake for them, and for the class, without drawing too much attention to it. For intermediate and advanced learners, you can focus more on the ins and outs of the language to help them build fluency.

Yet, instructors should provide a safe environment where making mistakes is seen as part of the learning process. This reduces the anxiety and encourages learners to take more risks in speaking.

Even if you don’t feel confident, you’ll look like you do if you adopt the correct body language. Stand tall, keep your head up, use your hands to gesture, make eye contact, and most importantly… smile.
1. Give her close ended questions. Not the typical Yes/No ones. 2. Schedule an activity around sequences. For example : steps to make tea. Steps to make a vegetable, or steps she follows to get ready for a party/ wedding. 3. Time her. Tell her she has to absolutely speak for about a minute or 90 seconds. 4. ?Show her a YouTube video and tell her to summarise it. 5. ?Ask her to make questions for you theme wise. For example : education related, hobby related etc 6. Make sure you tell her the theme of the next session so that she has time to think of incidents/ episodes to add value to the sessions. 8. ?You can give her activities related to advertising something. Put some adjectives on the screen so she doesn’t run out of ideas.
One tool I found useful is Google translate. I used it in Mexico to communicate in Spanish which I am not familiar with at all. It did lead to many hilarious moments. However, it brought me closer to the people I communicated with. The locals were happy that I was trying to speak to them in their language and patiently corrected me in a manner I could not take offence!

The strategy that I used years after leaving the English-speaking country was to watch videos in English. I did not use the language at home, on the street or at work, but I did watch videos in English to keep all the learning I had done active. Otherwise the mind is fragile and one forgets little by little, as happened to many colleagues.

Being adult learners means we mostly take things too seriously and sometimes are afraid of trying something new, or making mistakes. In other words, we're missing the FUN! The fun to enjoy learning foreign languages in this context. Be confident in 'making trouble' with the practice of speaking it! That way, we'll learn more in a fun way, as we tend to remember more of our 'mistakes or embarrassing moments'. Laugh it away and keep on learning new languages, more so as an adult. The next time you speak it, you'll be more confident, and might even share your experience about the (mis)usage of the language(s) to others, while spreading the fun.
It is important to have fun in the other language, so the mind associates fun with learning. In this way there will be an automatic predisposition to continue learning the other language. You have to like it to learn it
If a teacher knows their students very well, it becomes easier to make them laugh. Teachers should know what sort of things make the students laugh. Try to Use the humor students can enjoy and understand. Tongue Twisters are very funny warm up activities that can add fun to your class. Find some tongue twisters such as “A big black bug bit a big black bear, made the big black bear bleed blood.” and try them with your learners for fun.
No one’s mentioned it yet, but the absolutely vital part about learning to speak a language is who are you going to speak to? If you’re learning for business reasons you don’t want to use your business as practice time - but if you’re not careful that’s what you could end up doing. It’s essential to build up a community where you can practice and feel free to experiment. In a way that’s not ‘real life’ and not classroom practice either. You need conversation partners - someone you can just chat with. Who won’t correct you every 5 words, who doesn’t know the past perfect progressive but helps you speak in a conversation. Not someone who you’ll lose business from if you do mix up past simple and present perfect. A friend.
Bluff. Seriously - just bluff your way through it. Think: "If these [nationals] can do it, then so can I!" In the meantime, keep building up as much knowledge of the target language and culture as you can. After all, there's no bluffing without knowing what you're doing. Other than that: chest out, inhale, open your mouth and speak [language].
Adults possess the advantage of a general problem-solving system, that is not available to younger learners yet. This system associated with a pre-established linguistic system allow learners to make comparisons when learning the L2. Their metalinguistic knowledge can enhance the L2 acquisition process as opposed to what Communicative Language Teaching made us believe. Adults do not learn an L2 as kids do. They are different processes in their nature. Therefore, we need to be aware of those and use them in our favor in adult L2 acquisition, as metacognitive strategies.
I have found that simply reading a variety of texts out loud can be a great way to develop speaking confidence. Some of the students I have taught that made an effort to read out loud everday made incredible progress. Focus on Communication, Not Perfection: Emphasize conveying your message rather than worrying about making mistakes. Communication is key, even if it's not flawless. Expand Vocabulary: Learn new words and phrases to express yourself more accurately and effectively but don't focus too much on vocabulary that is more commonly used in formal situations unless it is a requirement for your job. Keep it simple! Imitate Native Speakers: Mimic the intonation, rhythm, and pronunciation of native speakers to sound more natural.
Another important reason to learn a second language well and quickly is that you realize that it is very useful, whether for work, for a relationship, or for studying. Therefore, getting the most out of the second language learned is crucial to perfecting it over time.
