Am and have been a CEO at venture invested company. We have found that the best way to set expectations jointly is a business plan. A part of the business plan is tangibles (numbers) on all parameters on the revenue ( users, pricing, revenue streams) and costs ( all cost heads). Is a great tracking mechanism as well

The best way to have a post investment relationship workout is to set expectations before the investment is made. It needs to be clearly communicated, wrote out and signed what these expectations are. There should be no surprises after the investment is made.

Also let your investors know up front what they can expect in terms of updates, and stick with this plan. At the earlier stages, there is no reason to overdo it, for example: - Ad hoc updates or questions done on an as-needed basis, e.g. email or WhatsApp - Monthly email update with key metrics, successes and any not-so-good aspects. It's important to be transparent and share bad news from the beginning, so nothing comes as a surprise when sh*t hits the fan - Annual or bi-annual larger update including reflections and plans moving forward (we use Notion for this) - When possible, it can also be good to meet face-to-face or have a call. Depending on the investor and their involvement, this can happen on an annual, quarterly or monthly basis

This is one of the most important, as founnders don't focus enough on getting value FROM their investors. Yes, the founder has to deliver results, but the investors shouldn't just be sitting in their corner offices smoking cigars and waiting for a pay day while playing with the Bentley online configurator. They should be actively contributing to the success of the business. It's in their own interest after all....

And not only does asking for referrals and intros maintain productive relationships with investors that “show your work”, so to speak, it can also be a SUPER efficient way of finding advantages. Need speaking slots? Ask your investors. EVERY event has VCs speaking. Odds are they have been invited. IF SO, the organisers literally cannot say no if they suggest your name as well. I’ve gotten myself speaking slots in Croatia, Korea, Dubai—all over the world using this trick.
