What stops you from implementing workplace safety?

1.Lack of awareness or knowledge. 2.Resistance to change. 3.Complexity of regulations. 4.Prioritization of other business aspects. 5.Complacency. 6.Poor organizational culture.

Main hurdle I have observed in work place safety implementation is worker behavior. They think safety is not that important and oversee the hazards present in their workplace. Another main reason to safety implementation is m negative safety culture in the organisation. If a person report accident or hazards he is to be blamed for that so as result incidents are not reported. Lack of Leadership from top management regarding matters of safety is also a main hurdle in implementation of workplace safety.

True leaders in safety inspire all others they work with and support to seek sound safety advice and ask tough questions that help them in their scope of work on large scale job sites when they need to better understand the multilayers of hazards and risks that are present and they may lack the presence to be aware and identify them. A safety professional needs to mentor everyone that needs to elevate their levels of workplace awareness. I always enjoy walking a job site with project managers, assistant project managers, engineers, speciality technicians, Sr. & Executive management and perform site safety audits with them and show them all of the perspectives we have to see and identify that have potential safety hazards that can be missed.

Implementing safety is not a one man show. Its a team work; involving safety and all other stake holders. What happens most of the time is that you face reluctance from stake holders when their targets are at stake; they will push you back, ignoring all the safety slogans and safety lessons that you taught them tirelessly 24/7. Recognizing safety first in true sense is well enough for implementing the safety at all levels.

Knowledge and know-how are also types of resources. In case you or the organization you work at don't own them, it is difficult to achieve a reasonable level of workplace safety.

Well.! when you choose safety by choice rather than by chance you will overcome this obstacle easily. Most of the time we as safety Professionals came across this issue ( Lack of commitment from top management & workforces) so, to overcome this barrier one should have effective communication skills, Adaptability,reporting skils,enthusiasm,burning Curiosity,passion for his/her Profession, diplomatic attitude, Empathy & aslo optimistic.

Meeting the budget as well as the schedule set for a given project is usually more probable to be rewarded, unlike safe work. Thus, safe work is not only perceived but also acts as a barrier, if not rewarded likewise.

Organisational culture is a major contributor to the success./ failure of HSE Initiatives. Staff regardless of their rank/status in the workplace need to buy in for the initiative to achieve its desired outcome.

Genuine staff buy-in is crucial for effectively implementing any procedure or process. It requires collaboration from top management and all employees. Without this buy-in, initiatives often become mere box-ticking exercises driven by legal or insurance needs. Health and Safety (H&S) works best when approached positively, rather than as a witch-hunt. Empowering employees through meaningful training fosters a culture of safety with minimal bureaucracy. It's disappointing that many international qualification bodies don't teach this collaborative approach. We need to shift from compliance to engagement, creating an environment where everyone feels responsible for safety. Let’s work together to make this shift a reality.

Change always brings resistance, and major hurdle in implementing workplace safety is that senior management consider it costly and waste of time and resources. Other factors that affect implantation of workplace safety include individual worker behavior towards safety and overall safety culture of the organisation. Lack of proper training in health and safety matter, poor communication and lack of consultation on matters related to health and safety. Introduction of new technology and changes in work methods , process and procedures.

Climate change further complicates safety by introducing new risks, while poor work organization increases injury likelihood. Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive risk assessments, effective control strategies, and a strong safety culture through training and worker involvement. Prioritizing health and safety is essential for fostering a productive work environment.

Often times, operators or supervisors will sacrifice safety or quality for the sake of production. Do not prioritize production over safety and quality. Make sure your operation understands your position on this subject.
