Uhm, no. The crosshair will only appear when capslock is on. And no, the curvature tool is not a "mode" of the pen tool, it's a completely different tool. And the convert anchor point tool does not exist anymore. It 's the Anchor point tool. So maybe instead of reading Chat GPTs poor attempt of impersonating a manual, read the real documentation instead.

2 Drawing a path

In Illustrator you can apply fills to closed and open paths alike. You can apply fills even to straight lines. And although you cannot see that fill, that will still make sense, e.g. when you need to use pathfinder functions. Effects can also be applied to open and closed paths alike. btw: there are great Illustrator trainings available on LinkedIn Learning.

To adjust the anchor points and handles of a path with the pen tool, you need to use the different modes of the pen tool or the direct selection tool. The add anchor point tool allows you to create new anchor points along a path by clicking on the segment. The delete anchor point tool allows you to remove existing anchor points by clicking on them. You can't use Illustrator's Pen tool by itself. To leverage the full functionality of this tool, you need to use option/command (Mac) or alt/control (Windows). The option/alt key allows you to terminate an anchor point or adjust the direction of the anchor point. The command/control key allows you to modify the incoming and outgoing direction of an anchor point as well. This tool takes practice! But don't give up. Once you master the Pen tool, the world is your oyster and you'll be able to draw anything you want!

I 100% agree with this statement. You're not going to become a Pen tool master overnight. But if you practice, you'll become more proficient with it and drawing using the Pen tool will become almost second nature. When I was learning the Pen tool, I'd look at billboards on my way to work. When I arrived at work, I'd try to recreate them, redrawing the shapes and paths that I saw which helped me practice the Pen tool using real-world examples.

I might help you to conceptually understand the Pen tool if you experiment with Illustrator's Curvature tool. The Curvature tool tries to simplify the act of drawing paths in Illustrator and can help you to better conceptualize the concept of bezier paths which is the foundation of the Pen tool.
