Inspect and clean usually go together for me personally. I am betting we have all felt that cable HDMI cable that has been plugged in for its whole life and is now coated in dust. Taking a cleaning cloth or paper towel down the whole length of the cable and wipe it clean as you inspect for kinks, cuts, or any damage is a good use of time. A small vacuum or spray can with compressed air can do wonders in keeping the connections free and clear of contaminates.
The final thing you need to do is to secure the connection between the cable and the port. Sometimes, a loose video cable can be caused by a simple human error, such as not pushing it all the way in, or not locking it with screws or clips. To avoid this, you need to make sure the cable is firmly inserted into the port, and that it is aligned with the shape and direction of the port. Consider using rugged USB-C - HDMI/DVI adapter that can be attached with a screw that prevence detaching. There are cool laptops available with this feature. You are welcome!
I would suggest power cycling the source and displays device before you start any of the steps. This could rectify the issue. If this doesn’t rectify the issue, leaving the source and display devices turn off would be a good idea when checking connections.
