While an Economist reads the news from a Macro perspective to know how the international and National events are taking a toll on the economy as a whole, the business analyst thinks differently. The Micro perspective is the starting point of the analyst, as they are more concerned with disseminating the reasons why economic events affect the diverse businesses in different ways and capitalise on that.

Whilst an economist thinks about the decision making process and trade offs made by an individual or firm, to be a business analyst, one needs to think like a business and understand how businesses work. It is important to apply economic theory to the business problem at hand, but not be so entrenched in theory that one is too rigid. Businesses do not always operate rationally. So learn about what makes business tick, understand key indicators that a business uses to run their business, then frame the business analysis around those indicators.

I have always found that economist tend to look at firms too theoretically. They bestow theory on the business to predict outcomes. When I see this happen, I tend to critique the analysis by saying "but that is not what happens in the real world." Data is key, but real word experience, when combined with data is a very powerful combination. So if there is an industry that is of interest, absorb yourself in it. Understand how it works. Get practical experience, look for credible data and the analysis part will fall into place naturally.

The most important toolset is your critical thinking. You need a wide variety of skills as business analyst, but you can’t prepare for all of them. Work hard on agnostic competencies; problem solving, adaptability, effective communication, creating connections. In my experience these have more value than programming languages or domain knowledge, for example.
