Before you offer your guidance to someone else, you need to reflect on your own strengths and goals as a mentor. What are the areas of non-profit management that you are most confident and passionate about? What are the skills and knowledge that you can offer to a mentee? My experience in non-profit organizations is over 10 years. Since the fifth year, I have been passing on my experience and talking openly about mistakes and how to avoid them. Being a mentor means teaching by experience and example. I grow with my mentees.

What are these free online apps or online platforms that have free non-profit mentorship? I know about school based alumni communities with mentorships, organization membership based communities, and paid executive coaching but nothing broad and free. I would love to offer mentorship and suggest the platform to mentees.

5 Learn and grow together

Mentoring is not a one-way street, but a reciprocal and dynamic process that benefits both parties. As a mentor, you can also learn and grow from your mentee's perspectives, experiences, and feedback. You can also expand your network, skills, and knowledge by interacting with other mentors and mentees in your program or platform. You can also seek feedback and support from your peers or supervisors, and reflect on your own strengths and areas for improvement as a mentor. You should also evaluate your mentoring relationship regularly, and adjust your approach and goals as needed.

You become a mentor once mentees are interested in learning from you. To inform them about your readiness and availability, you can suggest setting up a mentoring program within your organization (if it does not offer that service already). Openly communicate the supposed benefits of the mentoring program, what to expect, and how it works. Potential mentees shall understand what they undergo and what they can gain and, ideally, choose from a group of mentors. They should get to know you in an (informal) talk without further obligations.
