1 Types of SQL triggers

There are two main types of SQL triggers: DML triggers and DDL triggers. DML triggers are triggered by data manipulation language (DML) statements, such as INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE. DDL triggers are triggered by data definition language (DDL) statements, such as CREATE, ALTER, or DROP. Within each type, there are also subtypes of triggers based on the timing and scope of the trigger action. For example, a DML trigger can be either AFTER or INSTEAD OF, and either FOR EACH ROW or FOR EACH STATEMENT.

I simple words if you want to perform some task/command in database before or after the execution of query than you will implement trigger, that is responsible to perform task pre or post execution of query.

Data Manipulation Language (DML) Triggers DML triggers are the most common type of trigger. They are fired in response to data manipulation statements, such as INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE. DML triggers can be either BEFORE or AFTER triggers. BEFORE triggers are executed before the data manipulation statement is performed, while AFTER triggers are executed after the statement has been completed. Data Definition Language (DDL) Triggers DDL triggers are fired in response to data definition statements, such as CREATE, ALTER, and DROP. DDL triggers can only be AFTER triggers, as they are executed after the data definition statement has been completed. Logon Triggers Logon triggers are fired when a user connects to the database.

2 Creating SQL triggers

To create an SQL trigger, you need to use the CREATE TRIGGER statement, followed by the trigger name, the trigger event, the trigger timing, and the trigger body. The trigger body contains the logic that defines what actions to perform when the trigger is fired. The syntax and options may vary slightly depending on the database system you are using, but here is a general example of creating an AFTER INSERT trigger on a table called orders:

CREATE TRIGGER order_audit
AFTER INSERT ON orders
FOR EACH ROW
BEGIN
  INSERT INTO order_history (order_id, customer_id, order_date, order_amount)
  VALUES (NEW.order_id, NEW.customer_id, NEW.order_date, NEW.order_amount);
END;

This trigger will insert a record into the order_history table for each new order inserted into the orders table.

3 Managing SQL triggers

Once you have created an SQL trigger, you can use various commands to modify, disable, enable, or drop it. For example, to change the trigger name or body, you can use the ALTER TRIGGER statement. To temporarily turn off the trigger, you can use the DISABLE TRIGGER statement. To turn it back on, you can use the ENABLE TRIGGER statement. To remove the trigger completely, you can use the DROP TRIGGER statement. Again, the syntax and options may differ depending on the database system you are using, so always check the documentation before using these commands.

4 Using SQL triggers effectively

SQL triggers can be powerful tools for database development, but they can also present challenges and limitations. It's best to use triggers for simple and consistent tasks related to the table or view where they are defined, rather than complex or variable tasks that depend on external factors or user input. Additionally, use triggers sparingly and only when necessary; too many triggers can slow down the database performance, increase the risk of errors, and make the code harder to maintain and debug. When using triggers, exercise caution and test them thoroughly. Triggers can have unintended consequences, such as creating infinite loops, violating data integrity, or overriding user actions; therefore, always test your triggers in a development environment before deploying them to production. Finally, don't forget to add comments and documentation to explain the purpose and logic of your triggers. Since triggers are not visible in query results, they can be easily overlooked or forgotten by other developers or users. Make sure to document your triggers and comment your code to make it clear and understandable.

Our general rule is use triggers as a last resort, there is usually a better way if you design for it. If you have to use them, then do the minimum amount of work possible. Write to a queue system (built into SQL server), write the ids to a table to be processed outside of the transaction unless it’s absolutely necessary.
