What is spoofing and how does it relate to TCP?

1 TCP Basics

TCP stands for Transmission Control Protocol, and it is responsible for establishing a connection, dividing data into packets, assigning sequence numbers and acknowledgments, and ensuring error-free delivery. TCP uses a three-way handshake to initiate a connection between a client and a server. The client sends a SYN (synchronize) packet with a random sequence number, the server responds with a SYN-ACK (synchronize-acknowledge) packet with its own sequence number and the client's sequence number plus one, and the client sends an ACK (acknowledge) packet with the server's sequence number plus one. This way, both parties agree on the starting point and the rules of the data exchange.

2 TCP Spoofing

TCP spoofing is a type of spoofing attack that exploits the TCP handshake process to hijack a connection or create a fake one. An attacker can intercept or modify the SYN, SYN-ACK, or ACK packets to trick the client or the server into believing that they are communicating with a legitimate party, while in fact they are sending data to the attacker. For example, an attacker can send a spoofed SYN packet with a forged IP address to the server, and then send a spoofed ACK packet to the client with the server's IP address and sequence number. This way, the attacker can establish a connection with both the client and the server, and relay or alter the data between them.

3 TCP Spoofing Prevention

TCP spoofing attacks can result in data theft, identity fraud, denial of service, or malware infection. To prevent or detect these attacks, it is important to implement various methods. Encrypting the data using protocols such as SSL/TLS or IPSec can protect the data in transit from being read or modified by an attacker. Firewalls, routers, or intrusion detection systems can filter or block spoofed packets based on their IP addresses, ports, or signatures. Additionally, random or unpredictable sequence numbers make it more difficult for an attacker to guess the correct sequence numbers for the SYN-ACK or ACK packets. This includes terminating the connection and reporting the incident to your network administrator or service provider, who can help you trace the source and destination of the spoofed packets.
