During my internship and data instructor roles, I have seen both sides where mentorship and feedback have helped me and the others a lot. My manager used to tell me to make sure the key metrics were followed and the things that matter were taken care of.

It is critical nowdays to merge programming skills with statistics knowledge. That is why I always advise to take specific course of applied statistics with most famous programming languages like python or R. To consider as well is to become extremely proficient in one of the big data tools to cope with always increasing amount of data.
