In my experience, having the team members come up with the pain points to resolve is a great motivator to participate in the activity. It's amazing what ideas and challenges the team will share (clarity of scope may then be critical), and amazing as to what solutions will come from the collaboration and brainstorming such events can bring. Having the team participate in procedural reviews, updates (or even dismantlings) can be fun and exciting - let the team know and empower them to understand that they are in charge of the improvement, and have the ultimate in flexibility to make their processes (and working lives) better!
