What are some ways to gain strategic communications experience before starting your career?

I encourage all students to get involved in a student organization. If you are a student and don’t know how to get involved, please reach out to your academic advisor for campus resources. The office of student life will also be able to assist. Joining campus organizations gave me the foundation and opportunity, and to exercise my skills. Seek hands on experiences.

There are so many opportunities to gain experience that simply requires a little ingenuity. Think about any organization you belong to that could use help in communications- your church, an association, local politics. Try to fill an unmet need. Try to fill a void that has yet to be identified.

In today's virtual world there are a plethora of possibilities to explore volunteer, temp-to-hire, or entry-level positions within organizations of various sizes, depending on the skill level you desire to learn or increase toward. The important thing is to 'just do it'... get yourself involved. The first step will take care of the rest.

There are couple of ways to harness your skills- 1. Participate in as many school/ college events and work on multiple ideas, brainstorm with peers to test your ability and recognise your short comings 2. Seize online and offline volunteering activities that can help you work on impact- driven goals. 3. Attend as many workshops, online webinars possible to know what experts can add to your perspective about this space.

Courses and workshops are great to prepare, like getting a degree. The real experience will be at least slightly different, so don't get your 'process' to rigidly composed. Agility, creativity and innovation are just as important and those are learn on the fly as you experience the real-world objectives.

If you are seeking online workshops, I recommend starting with LinkedIn. And also search Ted talks. If you are looking for interactive experiences, there are many local clubs available such as PRSA and AMA. These organizations offer workshops and networking opportunities.

Volunteering is a great way to use your talents to help non for profit organizations reach their goals. Not only you are participating in a good cause, but networking with like-minded community members. These opportunities will help you flourish.

This is the most effective and constructive method to build a great foundation in understanding the power of strategic communications. Start with a community effort such as recycling efforts. People who attend such events are already motivated towards a great(er) cause and you will get to learn, appreciate and emulate how those who are leading or stand out in espousing the virtues of such efforts handle the way they speak, convey messages and help others appreciate the WHY of the effort. Further, also observe how people react, respond and resonate towards such conveyance of key messages. You will get to learn what moves people best, and what motivates them further. Here's were the world could change rapidly if people would find something they were passionate about and volunteer. I love the efforts of 'Feed My Children,' for instance. On the virtual scale, I'm Ops Director for Live and Let Live Global Peace Movement. Imagine the scale of activities involved. We've connected with a VA training school that gives graduates an opportunity to work with us to garner real-world experiences. Building communications skills, especially when a corporate style guide is involved, gives volunteers even greater experience in learning how to craft messages in alignment with the style guide. If you're a VA or looking for opportunity, align with an organization that is congruent with your passions; learn and grow.

What connects with your higher purpose. Whatever it is, find an organisation where you can locally or virtually make a contribution. Community outreach, ?? communication content creation, article authorship, social media marketing, and more are all part of multi media communications. Support your cause, gain valuable experience and strengthen your CV.

I started my career with a blog 15 years ago. It helped tremendously with networking, gaining confidence and learning SEO and ads tricks. And, rather than creating huge amounts of content, engage with your newly formed community, reply and connect.

I've been floating ideas on the Net for a couple of decades, honing my communication skills through authoring books, articles, blogging and website development (digital vitae - zenbenefiel.com). I have over two dozen books on Amazon. I further engage my skill set with doing interviews, hosting podcasts and accepting speaking engagements. These things happened later in life. Initially, I learned effective communication skill in the aerospace industry, in charge of $7MM/mo comprised of over 800 items. I had no 'official' authority, so I had to learn how to be authentic and yet persuasive. The golden rule really worked great, too. One of the best ways to learn is by experience and learning from others . When you start creating content on various platforms you mindset opens up. You start looking out for sources of knowledge and inspiration. Start making writing content and making video content. try to make a storyline and bounce off your ideas with LLM tools like ChatGPT to help analyse your content. Use it to analyse and not create content for you. As you create and share you will learn and grow over period of time yourself

It’s OK to take a leap of faith and start your own blog or newsletter. You have to take that risk in order to move on and achieve your goals. I have found more people are finding personal satisfaction in their own story, telling mechanisms. Social media has helped to amplify these personal stories that often are reaching people that need to hear what they say. It creates community, support and a voice that often needs to be heard.

Get feedback and mentorship not just from higher-ups, but also from peers and colleagues. You'll find people who are having similar experiences and are at a similar career level. This can be really helpful in understanding the nuances of a situation that a higher-up might not appreciate. Peers and colleagues also provide a terrific networking resource. When they understand more about who you are and what you're looking for, they will direct you to resources and opportunities you might not find on your own. And as you get to know them better, you'll be able to do the same. Win/win.

This is a rare ability, effective when cultivated. The ability to receive constructive criticism from your mentors and other people you admire/ look up to. Some of the biggest lessons are learnt when people who have greater expertise and understanding of your personality, career aspiration and goals share their feedback with you- honestly and openly. This bigger picture enables one to step back and make course corrections if needed. The biggest challenge though is being able to find that mentor who continues to be interested in your growth despite the differences of time, space and employment!

In many cases, mentors aren't available. Then what? Do your best in your efforts, first. Then learn how to be hyper-observant in body language and micro-expressions when in process of direct communication. This can be learned, for those that aren't naturally inclined to be self-observant. Digital communications are a bit more difficult to master, yet your intuitive self is often present, just not consulted well. There are three main components to any communication - attention, intention and interaction; what you're focused on, how/why it is necessary and the activity to facilitate it.

Share your content with people who are senior , thought leaders , experts and your peers. Ask for unbiased and frank feedback. Use AI tools like ChatGPT to bounce off your ideas and gather feedback on quality , flow of idea, clarity , bevity , language skills and connect.

There are several individuals that I use as a sounding board for my ideas. I feel comfortable going to these individuals because they will give me the feedback that I need to carry out my vision. I am very appreciative for the support that they offer. If you are seeking a mentor, identify someone that you have a great respect for either professionally and personally or both. If you are looking for advice to approach, someone start out with a simple intro, explaining that you are seeking mentorship. And you have identified them as a potential mentor because (insert the reason why). It will help the potential mentor understand your vision, and how they can assist.

It is vital to keep on trying and learning. Be open to feedback. Try out different tools , different concepts. It will help you develop your abilities better. I have over period of years learned a lot by just trying it out. there is ton of content to educate you once you decide. Just go ahead , soend some time on a routine basis to develop content and hone communication skills. Remember that Strategic Communications is a lot about the strategy employed to develop communication as much as the skills to communicate. It is a lot about understanding the mindset of your viewers and/or consumers

Read. Read a range of short and long content creators. Who is their target audience? How are their styles different? What do you think is effective? Try writing with a different demographic in mind. You don't have to publish or post everything, so give yourself room to explore a new voice. Take note of your assumptions, and push against them.
