Print method and quality are a critical calculation. For instance certain uncoated papers require a higher ink saturation to achieve the vibrancy you'd expect from a coated stock. If you're image requires a high saturation you're in danger of an unattractive final product. The paper can even lose it's weave - think of wet newspaper that you later dry out (called cockling by us print geezers). If you have any doubts concerning your media selection, talk to your print provider and order a print proof. And avoid the cheap internet services who fail to provide knowledgeable representatives to communicate with.

One of the best things you can do is ask for samples of previous things printed on the stock and method that you're interested in from your vendor. After looking those over you'll be able to narrow down your scope and move on to a proof of your own files.

There are some practical considerations which you should take into account. First, what is the purpose of your design? A business or greeting card is often intended to receive handwritten text. Glossy stock often does not easily accept pen, making it a poor choice. Uncoated matte is often best if your product will be written on. Second, the content of your design. Some subjects look best on glossy stock, which compliments their physicality in the real world. Chrome and glass. Vehicles and buildings. Conversely, landscapes often benefit from the subtlety of matte. Glossy grass can look odd. Third, detail. Glossy holds much more. Think sleek car lines vs an abstract painting. Content and purpose should both guide your selection.

Another thing to consider is whether the piece is folding. Some stocks are more prone to cracking than others, especially with heavier and coated papers. The amount of ink coverage along fold lines should be taken into account when making your selection. Sometimes cracking can be prevented by switching the grain direction to match the folds, but stock availabilities or more complex fold patterns might not have this option.
