What are some techniques to create an unforgettable fan experience?

Be approachable. I've worked for a number of brands in the sporting goods industry and I can say with great confidence some of the niche brands have the most loyal "fans of the brand" due to their approachability. Consumers/Fans of a brand love to be heard, appreciated, and welcomed. If your brand can do that, you'll always be memorable.

In my classes, and in my events, I adapt the proposals of the LEO, Lapland Center of Expertise for the Experience Industry: Generate unexpected multisensory and individualized experiences wrapped in a story and related to the authenticity of each target. As participants, users should feel immersed in an activity that balances their abilities with the proposed challenge and is immediately rewarding. All this requires knowing your target audience perfectly and a constant creative effort. But the years show that it was worth it.

Create an experience so impactful and memorable fans will be talking about it years to come. A good example of this, the Creed halftime show during the 2001 Super Bowl.

Being genuine and people oriented definitely helps in creating genuine experiences. We can easily preach what we abide for and work the other way around. People won't forget experiences that make them feel good and entertained and will go back for more.

Having competed in ski tour stops ranging from the upscale ambience of a tennis tournament, complete with lakeside espresso services, to the high-energy atmosphere akin to a CrossFit competition featuring DJs and entertainment, I've seen firsthand how these elements impact the event's success. The only shortfall comes when an event fails to cultivate any specific environment at all. In my view, facilities at the stadium need to be given higher importance than TV. Whether it's transportation, parking, seats, or F&B, the services in the stadium are what will lead to long-term engagement with the fans.

Watch professional ice hockey in Europe then watch the NHL. You tell me what you see and which is more fun. It’s 2 different worlds. In EU People bring their flags, their noise makers, face paint, the constant chants and cheers, everyone in team colors, it’s non stop action and cheering. This is unreal for the athletes and allows fans to be part of the experience, a true 7th player in not just bystanders. This is a community around a common goal. Western hockey Jr A & Minor league clubs should use this model.

Small things like sending letters to supporters, give them a call, invite them to watch training, visits to hospitals, spend some genuine time with them can create memorable moments. I remember once a manager I know went on a motorbike ride with one loyal supporter around a safe area and the feedback was it was the best day of her life.

During my 10 year career, 7 of which were spent in Europe across 6 different leagues. In my opinion, hands down the environment at some European leagues/teams, far surpassed any in North America. The passion, flag waving, drum beating, constantly chanting fans were unlike anything I’ve seen. Especially in the Czech Republic and Germany. I’ll never forget after games staying on the ice and celebrating with the fans.
