Plan to be sustainable. When pitching the idea already know you can source the recyclable products and have them properly recycled. Look for companies that exclusively create sustainable products, these are the people that will have creative solutions. Cardboard and paper are the basics that everyone knows - but are your rollerbanners sustainable, are you using recharagble batteries, can you use community donated products rather than purchasing newly made materials, can the recycled fabric actually be cut up clothes and curtains from a local charity shop? Being sustainable is actually being creative before you decide on a budget.

Obviously it completely depends on the event and if this is possible, however one thing I have done is used biodegradable products when handing out items. For example: when handing out flyers to promote an event, print these on seeded paper. This means someone can use the flyer and plant it in their garden and watch it grow flowers. It is turning your message and advert into a sustainable gift for the community and the environment.

It's a wonderful idea to reduce energy consumption but ultimately it only makes a difference when this is largely supported. In doing so make being low-impact a company-wide point. Sell yourself as an Events Company that exclusively uses renewable energy to power your office and employees. Especially when putting on events we won't always be using our own space and have autonomy over the energy there, so make the most of what you can control when planning the events.

Something I am passionate about is always using the community. Not only are these the people who will benefit from the event but they are also the people who will want it to be good. So get them involved. Plan into your marketing a call out for donations of preloved items for your event. Events such as school uniform swaps, where the community donate unused or not longer needed school uniforms and then these are put on rails for those who need them to come and collect, work amazingly well. You are creating a space to fuel the community using what they already have and redistributing rather than creating from scratch under the guise of them being made of sustainable materials.

Something to always consider is the level of greenwashing. This is where you pose as doing something environmentally friendly while also being very unsustainable. An example would be to host an event which focuses on recycling at a location with no recycling bins or policy. Being sustainable is in every step of the company, not just the campaign.
