Comps are really helpful at giving a ballpark, but ultimately your company isn't really worth anything pre-revenue. Unless you have hard IP, everyone is essentially "guessing" at the value of the company. If you have a solid team and a little bit of funding, the company will likely be worth $2m - $5m. It'll depend on a lot of factors, but the ultimate factor is what the founders and investors agree to.

Given the limited financial data available for startups, I recommend leveraging the Scorecard Method with insightful adjustments to provide a comprehensive and reliable valuation because: Simplicity and Ease: The Scorecard Method uses a scoring system based on qualitative factors like team, market, and product, making it easier to apply with limited financial data. When there is no financial data its hard to call it a valuation. Think of it more as a price that is determined by best practices of the industry and geography. Price is usually obtained through reverse engineering. Consider this scenario: Founders figure out they need $1m for an 18 month runway. They are willing to give up to 10%-20% of the company in that round. Depending on negotiations the price will be probably in a range of $5m - $10m. Usually pivots happen and industries undertake major changes. You want to make sure to have the right person to navigate the storm. With no financials, the value is in the founder not the startup. Hard to put the value on that.

In my opinion, traditional approach for valuing things like the scorecard, venture capital, discounted cash flow, and first Chicago methods are just the beginning for me when it comes to money. I look at them with the skepticism of a financier, like sailing unpredictable markets in a simple dinghy. Even though these methods are fundamental, they are only the building blocks. My approach is more daring because it goes against the norms of a market that is known for being volatile. I see these traditional ways of doing things as just quick guides that force us to find our own unique ways to move forward in the complicated world of VCism, where the real art is not just playing the game but also coming up with clever new rules for it.
