Identifying the root cause of a disagreement is indeed crucial. It's often helpful to employ techniques like the "5 Whys" method, where you repeatedly ask "why" to peel back the layers of a problem. I recall a situation where a project disagreement seemed to stem from differing technical perspectives, but when we delved deeper, it was actually rooted in misaligned understanding of the project's long-term goals. This approach not only clarified the misunderstanding but also strengthened team cohesion by aligning our objectives. Understanding the underlying cause, beyond just the surface-level disagreement, is key to finding a constructive resolution.

1. Hold separate meetings with each party to understand their positions and interests. 2. Encourage both parties to communicate openly and honestly with each other. 3. Use non violent communication to deescalate the situation. Anger can over take situations and make it worse for everyone. One simple thing to do is first clear your perception with a check. The formula goes “when you said x did you mean y or x? What was going on?” Doing this helps someone look back at what happened and brings them into the present. I do this with engineers a lot and it always helps me figure out what’s going on. Most of the time the root cause is fear in some form.

Listen to his perspective. May be he didn’t understood the requirements clearly or he might be not experienced for the requirements or there might be tight deadline for the requirements asked. So first understand the problem.

If it is just rants and raves, or baseless arguments on either side, then no amount of listening by anyone will solve it. Discussions need to be grounded not on baseless conjectures and illogical theories, but on - practical experience - rational arguments - evidence and supporting data when available. In the absence of such logic on either side, decisions reached will most likely be incorrect, no matter who wins.

In some cases of serious disagreement I have found that it helps to bring in a neutral third party who is respected by both. S/he can listen to both sides, provide a different perspective, and/or "vote" for a specific solution, like an arbitrator. The plan that both of you are going to end up agreeing to has to have clear outcomes, control points and early deviation detection. And also if possible a plan to correct them. It is important also to set up follow up meetings and checkpoints.
