What are some strategies for promoting diversity and inclusion in innovation projects?

Diversity refers to the presence of different types of people within a group or organization, including race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, and disability. Inclusion goes beyond diversity, creating an environment where everyone feels welcome, respected, and valued. It ensures equal access to opportunities, promotes collaboration, and fosters a sense of belonging. Embracing diversity and practicing inclusion leads to enhanced creativity, improved decision-making, increased employee satisfaction and productivity, better problem-solving, and stronger relationships. By valuing diversity and actively promoting inclusion, we can build stronger organizations and societies that benefit everyone.

One thing I’ve found helpful in setting up teams is to also consider diversity in personalities and neuro diversity. These go beyond physical appearances, but can have a great impact on the outcome of a brainstorm or creative design session. If people are truly wired differently, the outcomes can and most likely will be totally different compared to if they hadn’t been together.

Best promotion of Diversity and Inclusion is making it concrete by making part of the team. Many theories /training can never have the same impact as involving diversity in direct concrete approach!

Creativity is a process of uniting the diverse parts of yourself to develop some idea, product, or tool that is bigger than your singular imagination. But diversity can also be injected from external actors. Other people can review, tweak, rearrange, and otherwise savage your creative outputs. And that's just what you want. Avoid doing what's easy, safe, and predictable. Inject a little madness; enhance it; refresh it; and smooth the result so that it looks completely intentional.

From my experience, collaborating with diverse stakeholders can help challenge and validate assumptions, reducing the risk of developing products or services that do not resonate with a wider audience.

Brainstorming sessions with the team and stakeholders involved is a great way to foster openness and feedback. A couple recommendations: - Do it continuously, after a big milestone or after finalizing a phase of a project. - Discuss what went well, and what didn’t work out. - Use round robin brainstorming techniques and tools (i.e. Mural templates), this allows for everyone to equally collaborate without being influenced by contributions of previous participants. - Debrief on points raised by each participant, to better understand the root of the problem - Introduce the “How might we” question to find solutions to the identified problems - Define and prioritize action points based of the feedback provided

Although, it is important to talk about inclusion and diversity in companies. It is important to also see it. Ensuring our advertising and materials used in training, publicity, communications is also fostering an attitude of representation is important. We need to ensure we are not just "ticking boxes' and just talking about inclusion and diversity. We need to see that which is discussed put into action.

A great way to make sure psychological safety is encouraged is to spend time to build personal connections. When people and team members know what another person likes and dislikes and does for fun, they are more likely to feel like they can be open and share feedback.

Innovation thrives when diverse perspectives intersect, but biases and conflicts can stifle progress. From my experience, To promote inclusion, one should acknowledge these biases openly, and foster a culture of self-awareness by encouraging constructive dialogue to resolve conflicts, transforming them into opportunities for growth. Embrace the rich tapestry of ideas that emerges when we confront bias and conflict head-on, igniting innovation's true potential

One thing I have found helpful is to have an understanding of the diverse background of the members of the innovation team. That recognition has to be intentional so as it will dismantle any preconceived notions about someone or some people.

Organizations often create a too narrow scenario horizon when planning for the future. People from outside, especially artists, can feel and think outside the box or even without a box. The future will never be how we planned it, black swans lurk everywhere, but diversity will make you more antifragile - and afterwards will give you the reassuring feeling that you did everything you possibly could to be ready for things to come.
