What are some strategies for introverts to build a professional network?

My journey as an introvert in networking involved recognizing my strengths, setting clear objectives, managing energy, building self-confidence, expanding my comfort zone, nurturing lasting relationships, diversifying my network, showing gratitude, seeking guidance, staying informed, and practicing patience. Embracing these factors and my unique qualities allowed me to create valuable connections while staying true to my authentic self.

My go-to strategy as a 95% introvert is to observe, absorb and then engage. We take more time to consider before we respond and that's okay. We are good listeners so make use of that skill.

it's important to know your unique combination of your skills, talents, knowledge and experience and that called your strength that will helps you to improve and increase your self-awareness.

As part of your planning, get to know a host or organiser of an event. They can become your new best friend. They are the gatekeepers, take registrations, introduce you to people, potentially provide a guest list, have access to a much bigger database. They are a key person to know for the success of your networking journey.

Planning your work ahead is a critical aspect of managing time effectively and achieving your goals. Whether you are a student, a professional, or someone who wants to achieve personal milestones, planning ahead can make all the difference in the following: 1. Reduces Stress and Increases Productivity 2.Enhances Goal Achievement 3.Improves Work-Life Balance 4. Save Time

Set a goal beforehand so you feel a sense of accomplishment at the end. It could be simply to remain in the room without fleeing, introduce yourself to 3 people, find a new supplier etc. I created a formula of having 8-10 five minute conversations with people over the 1 hour availability after formalities at an event. Then you'll likely follow up with 3-5 people to cultivate the relationship. That's when you set up a 1-1 meeting.

Asking for feedback is one of the best ways to feel ‘in control’ of your work, get an accurate idea of what is expected of you and judge how you can improve even further.

If you have a process to follow, you are more likely to grow your confidence and enjoy being in a room. Most people struggle with a plan so they have an adhoc approach to networking. Be deliberate. The three biggest struggles people have are physically approaching people, starting a conversation and moving on. You can create a list of starter questions and methods for exiting yo avoid most, if not all, awkwardness. Have those front of mind even you're there and you'll find the experience much more enjoyable.

It's less intimidating than face-to-face networking and allows you to connect with people in your field, including those in environmental engineering or related areas. Engage with content relevant to your interests, join groups, and participate in discussions. You can also attend webinars or small meetups, which might feel more manageable than large events. When you attend, set a goal of connecting with just one or two people. Preparing talking points related to your work, like experiences from energy auditing or specific engineering projects, can make interactions easier.
