Of course mechanics should always have good visual feedback but consider how games have used visuals o really immerse you or build up characters. One example of world building was when I first saw the rain effect in Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, not only was it so new at the time but it really empathise with those characters in that. Get creative when making UI! For realistic games, more subtle UI does really well for maintaining immersion. My favorite example of this is the backpack in Dead Space. It shows your health, ammo, and other player info on the actual player character's body, so you don't need any UI overlays for any of these aspects. Find other creative ways to inform the player while maintaining the feeling of the experience you're going for.
