As a lecturer in the space of marginalised students, the biggest backlog for these students is to get them to a point where they can compete academically with the “big guns”. It means that lecturers need to spend more time than usual to hold their hand and guide them on basic tools of academic writing. The more marginalised students get opportunities to write the better they get at it. Marginalised students in South African context is less concerned with financial support than academic support.

Having strategic allies across teams that can act as change agents for diversity is key. People don't value diversity and don't become inclusive until they engage their EI and walk in their shoes and/or become more educated and excited about others'differences. Those key alliances across wider stakeholder groups can act as ripples of change by spreading the learning about what it means to be both inclusive and different in the everyday. Indirect advocacy can be as powerful as direct rhetoric sometimes. Ideally you have both. This creates the ripple of cause and effect.
