What are some strategies for building a successful VC career?

After founding Ganje and talk with a lot of VCs, I believe that a VC without a great network or a complementary value for startups in which they invest, will lead to failure. Money cannot be the leverage of a VC.

"Your network is your net worth" - Porter Gale. Network is probably the single most important aspect of building (and starting) a successful career in Venture. Financial returns, i.e., one's track record is definitely the most tangible and quantitative metric to measure success, however, your network is likely to be the underlying hidden force behind great returns. A strong network will not only give you access to the best deals and LPs, but will also play a key role in the value add an investor can provide to its portfolio startups, whether via intros to co-investors, follow-on capital, or advisors, recruiting senior execs, etc. Build strong enduring relationships, friendships rather than business contacts.

BUILD A TRACK RECORD WITH SPECIAL PURPOSE VEHICLES If I could do it all over again, I would have done more special purpose vehicles for a longer period prior to launching an actual venture fund. What’s a special purpose vehicle (aka SPV)? It’s a company set up to invest in only 1 business. Investors know what they are buying. Why? Institutional and family office fundraising is exponentially more difficult without a strong track record and large anchor investor. Those are difficult to source without a strong track record unless you already have existing relationships. By starting with SPVs you raise money for 1 company at a time thereby giving time to build a solid track record. It’s a far easier way.

The Venture Capital Industry is fundamentally flawed, it favors just a few, and it needs systemic change. Know that going particularly if you are a woman, black, latine, indigenous, as you will face higher barriers to entry — this can lead to a feeling of inadequacy or imposter syndrome. I don’t say this to discourage anyone from going into the industry — on the contrary, venture will never change until we change the face of who gets to write checks. But it’s important to know this going in so you don’t fall into the idea that you are the problem. Build your networks and join organizations that are trying to change the face of venture. If you are Latine for example, I recommend FamiliaVC and SomosVC, they have great programs and resources.

Having an expertise (whether it is functional or domain expertise) is so important in the VC world as it signals to other VCs that they can share relevant startups to you or reach you to you for particular questions. Sometimes things that seem obvious to you may not be the same to the most people outside of your domain/industry.

Keep learning. VC is a field in which it can be beneficial to know a little bit about a lot of things. Staying ahead of the course by updating yourself through news and your network makes a vast difference.

Becoming known for your 'Hill-Top Advantage' in your subject of choice won't hurt one bit. I'm a big fan of GPs coming from an operational background as that is what I did myself, but that will only take you so far. You need to find ways to keep up to date on the cutting edge of industry and to do that you need to keep learning about the latest and greatest advancements and keep talking to folks that are plugged in at different levels within industry.

Even if someone enters as the decision maker the investments they make won’t play out for 5 - 7 years or potentially for the next decade. That means having the tenacity to watch dozens of investments fail prior to being a part of a grand slam. The discipline it takes to constantly learn and evolve while not seeing that effort pay off is rare and difficult. In a world of instant gratification, a VC career requires a unique willingness to embrace delayed gratification while constantly working to achieve results. It must be about the journey and not the destination.

While it is good to have a very large of network of experts, founders, and VCs, I personally find that it is most mutually beneficial when I can help others (usually a handful of people) solving their problems, such as warm introductions, quick feedback, or just simply talking things out.

Being on both sides, I believe it is very beneficial for people who jump to VC straight after school to firstly have some experience building a business or at least working in a startup. At the same time, I think it would be even more beneficial for founders to understand more about how the VC business works. For example, if founders understood how difficult it is to fundraise for a fund, they wouldn't be crying that fundraising for their own startup is hard.
