You can use tools such as power mapping, stakeholder analysis, or power analysis to identify who has what kind of power, how they use it, and how it affects others. Power dynamics should not be such that a leader is coercive and applies forceful and regressive behaviour towards employees. Actual power comes from bringing in positivity and progressiveness amongst employees motivating them to work productively.

In the advocacy arena, it's important to first understand whether and how you might experience privilege relative to partners. For example, due to historic and ongoing discrimination, white-led organizations are often better funded than BIPOC-led organizations, have a bigger platform, and might also have stronger relationships with decision makers. This is true at the national, regional, state, and local levels in the U.S. Because national work is often given more visibility, many national organizations are better resourced than regional and state organizations, with similar results. In addition to organizational factors, individuals' experiences with systemic discrimination can shape power dynamics and expectations in partnership work.

Sharing power can look differently in various contexts and the ways of sharing power should be strategic and beneficial for those who are underrepresented. One tool that I like to use for reflection on power sharing is the "Ladder of Participation". This framework examines whether power sharing is authentic. Many times people confuse participation with power sharing and this tool provides a way of actually examining who benefits and who retains power in different arrangements.

In my experience, this is a huge one. If you work at a national organization in the states, for example, you might do this by earmarking funds for pass through funding to support the work of advocates and organizers on the ground in states that experience severe underinvestment, using your platform to lift up their work, or sharing funding and other opportunities that you think could be a good fit for their work.
