Your portfolio should be exciting and as visual as possible. Do not offer a ton of details on each of your past projects. Just show the problem that existed and the results you provided. 1. Try and get paid hourly as much as possible. I see a lot of young developers doing fixed-price projects, who completely underestimate what it will take for them to reach the finish line. 2. Make sure the scope is clearly set in the beginning and communicate to your client that any changes may take additional take and incur additional costs. 3. If you're a brand new freelancer, set your hourly rate to be a little lower than what others are charging... but not too much lower as to signal that you are not valuable. Raise your hourly rate as you take on more clients. My personal rule of thumb? With every 5-6 successful projects, revise your hourly rate.

The debates whether to charge an hourly rate or per-project/value added are ongoing. I'd consider charging per hour when starting in this business and then move to value added pricing once you get more experience and can estimate the work needed better. When you're charging per-hour you can be motivated to charge as many hours as possible (probably good for you), but the client might push back which could lead to a conflict. In this way you're also protected against unknown obstacles that might take (much) more time than anticipated at first. Charging by added value can mean higher earnings, but you have to know how to estimate that "added value" and then protect yourself from scope creep, by clearly defining it at the beginning.

Until you get a client base, be flexible on getting paid. Do not work for free (that looks bad), but get a feel for what the client prefers. My best clients were invoiced monthly, but I usually gave them an estimated range up front. You want to avoid surprises, so let them know if a given task is causing problems as soon as possible.

Clients will definitely request additional features that involve APIs that one is not familiar with, which makes learning crucial if one wants to grow their business presence (which is what freelancing is after all: an individual business). Your clients will respect you and your space... and if they don't, they're probably not good clients to begin with. 2. Eating a balanced diet fuels both your body and your mind, keeping oyu energized and foucsed. 3. A good night's sleep is the best remedy for coder's block. It is essential for cognitive functions like memory, creativity and problem-solving... all critical skills for a software developer.

* Get up for a short walk (a few minutes, can be just around your house/block) every 2 hours or so, and especially if you find yourself stuck at a problem. * Also, ideally define beforehand, when you'll start and stop working each day and stick to it. * Communicate that to your clients and don't check or answer emails etc. if not urgent! You'll be surprised to see that most of the clients can respect those boundaries, and those who don't, you shouldn't be working for. * Try to get at least 150 minutes of zone 2 cardio per week: strong body -> strong mind. * Avoid consuming caffeine after midday, view morning and evening sunlight and dim your screens in the evening. * Balanced died (non-processed foods) and sleep are also very important!

Do not sacrifice your intellectual property in exchange for quick financial growth. Even if that involves growing a bit slower, the benefits of that will show up in time. If you're a freelancer in the software customization business, be sure to make it legally clear to your clients that you own the IP behind the technology you've developed and that you have the right to reuse it and to showcase it in any way you see fit (not involving their own internal assets of course), the same way they own their own assets and expect you not to leak or disclose them. Make sure both parties explicitly agree on what is yours and what is theirs and make sure any NDAs you sign go both ways: your work is as valuable as theirs.

Freelancing is not for everyone, since it's all on you to go out at find clients (at least at first), market yourself, network etc., basically run your own small business. But if you're up for the challenge, you can be rewarded with (much) higher earnings than you'd get for the same work working in a company, especially if you know how to capture some of that added value you're providing (but it takes time to get there). Another benefit (or detriment) is managing your own work and having the ability to choose clients (and projects) on your terms.
