The most popular and commonly used algorithms include Random Forest (Classification), K-means (Clustering), Gradient Boosting (Regression), Apriori (Association Rule Mining), Principal Component Analysis (Dimensionality Reduction), and Isolation Forest (Anomaly Detection). As for applications; leverage Random Forest for predictive maintenance in manufacturing. Use K-means for customer segmentation in e-commerce. Gradient Boosting works best for financial forecasting, Apriori can be used for market basket analysis in retail. PCA is good for image compression in healthcare, and Isolation Forest brings value for fraud detection in finance. These algorithms align with specific use cases, optimizing insights extraction from vast datasets.

XGBoost or More recently LightGBM are indispensable names in the classification world, especially for the tabular datasets. That being said simpler algorithms like decision trees, etc. can very well be employed where more complex algorithms aren’t needed. I always thought clustering and classification should be a single one, as the only difference between both is that the first used unsupervised (aka "unlabeled" data) while the second uses supervised ("labeled") data.
