1 Dynamic routing basics

In addition to what others mentioned, the concept of Software defined network is another important aspects of dynamic routing that creates a hybrid environment where a centralized control plane with holistic view of the entire network along with the programming capabilities allows the users to dynamically modify the forwarding table. This helps extend the traffic steering based on not just the traditional metrics but also based on various other operational and non-operational (such as user experience) based routing states.

2 Static routing basics

Static routing is a process where network administrators manually define the routes for each router in the network. Static routing does not use any routing protocols or exchange any information with other routers. Static routing is simpler and more secure than dynamic routing, as it does not depend on any external factors or expose any network information. However, static routing is also more rigid and inflexible than dynamic routing, as it cannot adapt to network changes, failures, or congestion dynamically. Static routing also requires more administrative overhead and maintenance than dynamic routing, as any changes in the network topology or configuration must be updated manually on each router.

4 Software-defined networking
